FORGE DE LAGUIOLE
Pierre-Jean Calmels, blacksmith with Laguiole, designed the first knife of Laguiole in 1829, while taking as a starting point two models, the capuchadou, usual knife of the peasants of Aubrac and the Spanish navaja, brought back Catalonia by the seasonal workers. The hardest steel hardened in the purest water, that of the source of the village of Laguiole, a spring to fold the blade, a handle worked in the horn of oxen of Aubrac and a knife of exception had been born.
With the passing of years, Pierre-Jean Calmels improved his art and was not long in imposing its clasp knife, while adding to it since 1840, a punch to meet the needs for the shepherds and stockbreeders. In 1880, Forge Laguiole improved and added the corkscrew.
The sculpture which decorated the head has seen various evolutions styles such as the rhombus, the flower of lily, four-leaf clover, the sheet of tree or even the profile of man capped with a Phrygian cap, before adopting what will become the emblem of the knife of Laguiole: the bee.
