Certainly this can be easily mistaken for an old Scotch single malt, though not a top one. That said, this is enjoyable stuff especially when considering the Indian distiller's perennial problem of overcoming the fierce temperatures that make maturation such a nightmare. With Amrut there is profound oak on both the nose and finish, giving the impression of a Speysider at about 35 or 36 years. That, usually, isn't always good. However, the sweet richness of the malt on the palate is a joy, with a boundless energy that pulses through to the prickly, oaky finish. Solid, honest whisky (with a non-scotch flourish at the finish) that would, after a black coffee, follow the finest Chicken Korma.'
