New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs in the April 2021 edition of Decanter magazine. Cameron reports that the 2020 wines ‘punched above their weight (some well above) … New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is evolving’ and awards the joint top score of 95 points to Greywacke’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

95 points - joint top scoring wine
"Seductive bouquet of wild flowers and minerals, a fine-leesy complexity and fresh aromas and flavours of citrus, peach tea and sweet hay. Crisp, refreshing, fruity and dry with fine texture. Just enough concentration of flavour to contrast the fresh herb notes and salivating acidity. Well made and long."

In Club Oenologique, Susan Hulme MW picks out her ‘top performers’ of the Brunello di Montalcino 2016 vintage. ‘For me,’ says Susan, ‘the best 2016s embody an extra leap forward in quality with regards to the finesse and quality of the tannins, which have a special seamless quality, even in wines so young. I am convinced this is due to producers’ deeper knowledge and understanding of how to get the best from Sangiovese both in the vineyard and the winery, with greater attention to detail in the vineyards, and more focus on achieving balance and harmony.’  Susan concludes that ‘2016, in short, is the best of the lot.’  Among her top 25 rated wines is the San Polo Brunello di Montalcino (94 points, available from April 2021), with its ‘modern approach, careful use of oak and bright fruit style.’

"Subtle nose of cherries soaked in alcohol, sweet-oak spice and cream with some roasted coffee bean notes. Soft, round, medium-full bodied first impression, underpinned by a forceful tannic structure. Modern approach, careful use of oak and bright fruit style. Tightly wound, this wine needs time to open up."
