“Brunello from 2016 and Brunello Riserva from 2015 are poised for long-term success, they will undoubtedly be remembered as important highlights on a long timeline of vintages.” Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
It is clear that 2016 Brunello is a spiritual successor to the 2010, with excitement from the producers being easily matched by high praise from the critics. We have already seen demand far outstrip supply on the few wines already in the market, so we are delighted to offer the new releases from one of our favourites: Sesti.
These elegant wines are produced by Giuseppe Maria Sesti and his daughter Elisa from just 9 hectares of vines within 100 hectares of woodland and olive groves. The land surrounds the Castello di Argiano which features on their labels. Sesti are located in the warmer south-west corner of Montalcino at around 350m above sea level, with layered soils of oceanic sediment. Here, they produce a more traditional style of Brunello matured in large Slavonian oak botti: precise wine with prominent floral notes that is accessible young, and ages gracefully.
We are particularly excited this year to also be able to offer Sesti’s Riserva, the Phenomena - named so because the label changes every time it is produced, depicting significant astronomical events during the growing season. For the 2015, the artwork depicts the position of Venus alongside a cluster of stars known as the Pleiades, inside the Taurus constellation – the bold design reflecting the power and class of this muscular wine. Allocations of this wine are extremely limited, so we suggested placing an order as soon as possible.
THE WINE ADVOCATE 94 points - “The Sesti 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a soft and nicely textured disposition. This wine has a lovely way about it, not showing too much power or tannins that are too firm. You smell the dark ripeness of the fruit and some of the spice that comes from slow aging in large oak casks. Balanced acidity and tart fruit flavors appear on the close.” - Monica Larner.
