Description

We are very pleased to announce the start of the highly anticipated 2020 Bordeaux En-Primeur campaign, one which promises to be as exciting as it is different in our new post-brexit, mid-covid world.

Not having had the chance to travel to Bordeaux to taste we are very reliant on several key factors namely; pedigree, reputation, consistency and critics and the critics seem to like it.

_____

Château Beychevelle is a 4ème Cru Classé St-Julien wine property that boasts one of the most impressive châteaux in the whole of the Médoc. Its label depicts a beautiful galley with a large sail, as a consequence of its ownership in the 16th century by the Duc d`Eperon, Admiral of France at the time. The expression "Baisse-Vaille", meaning "lower sails", later evolved into the name Beychevelle. Today the property is owned by Grands Millésimesde France.

Beychevelle's 85 hectares of vineyards are located in the far south of the St-Julien appellation, just outside the hamlet of St-Julien-Beychevelle. The wine is typically a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. It is matured in oak barrels (50-60% new) for 18 months. It is renowned for its suppleness, smoothness and its rich, and sometimes chocolatey character.

The best examples from the best Beychevelle vintages are powerful and concentrated, with oodles of almost sweet, ultra-ripe Cabernet fruit, and can age effortlessly.

THE WINE ADVOCATE (94 - 96)
Drink Date: 2026 - 2046
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 20th May 2021
"Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Beychevelle offers up vibrant notes of black raspberries, fresh black cherries and cassis, plus hints of wild sage, chocolate mint, rose hip tea and fallen leaves, with an exotic hint of Indian spices. The medium to full-bodied palate offers layers of crunchy black fruits with a firm, grainy texture and just enough freshness, finishing long and perfumed."

JAMES SUCKLING 94-95 Points
15 Apr, 2021 – "Sweet-berry and tobacco character with blackberries and violets. It’s full-bodied with firm, polished tannins and a fresh finish. Very fine at the end."

DECANTER 94 Points
Tasted by Jane Anson - Part of Best St-Julien 2020 wines tasted en primeur
"Smoke, grilled almond on the nose, even a touch of rubber from an edge of reduction. This has depth to black chocolate and bilberry fruit, it is well balanced and seductive. Enjoyable, it's pretty broad shouldered but it sits well within the successful run of vintages at Beychevelle. A yield of 47hl/ha. 18 months ageing. 55% first wine. Drinking Window 2029 - 2044."

JANCIS ROBINSON 17.5 points
Drink: 2027 - 2042
"Cask sample. Combines black fruit with an attractive gravelly quality on the nose – petrichor, perhaps? Long and elegant on the palate. The mineral element gives attractive and immediate complexity."
