Description

We are very pleased to announce the start of the highly anticipated 2020 Bordeaux En-Primeur campaign, one which promises to be as exciting as it is different in our new post-brexit, mid-covid world.

Not having had the chance to travel to Bordeaux to taste we are very reliant on several key factors namely; pedigree, reputation, consistency and critics and the critics seem to like it.

______

Château Grand Puy Ducasse is a frequently overlooked Pauillac 5ème Cru Classé property that after years in the doldrums, now produces fine quality claret at very reasonable prices. The catalyst for change was its acquisition by the négociant firm, Mestrezat. It has extensively replanted in the vineyards, and built a new cuvier and chai.

Grand Puy Ducasse has 45 hectares of well-sited vineyards, one parcel on a gravel plateau near Batailley, and another adjacent to Lafite-Rothschild and Mouton-Rothschild. The wine is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot - it is matured in oak casks (30% new) for 18 months before being bottled.

Grand Puy Ducasse is a mid-weight Pauillac that displays good depth of fruit and is usually drinkable 5 years after the vintage - the best examples can last for 10-15 years.

JAMES SUCKLING 94-95 Points
22 Apr, 2021 – "Beautiful richness and depth, offering plums, berries and redcurrants with some walnut and hazelnut undertones. It’s full-bodied and layered. Flavorful finish. One of the best ever."

DECANTER 90 points
Tasted by Jane Anson
"Some grilled smoke edges to the aromatics on the first nose. This is extremely tight in its tannins, pretty austere and you need to take a beat to allow this to settle. Cassis and blueberry fruit notes help bring some juice among the tight muscular structure. The oak is a little evident overall, but this is carefully made with promise. Harvest September 15 to October 1. Drinking Window 2025 - 2036."

JANCIS ROBINSON 16.5 points
Drink: 2027 - 2040
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot. Cask sample.
"Fruity and fulsome on the nose with dark-fruit notes and a dash of (quality) oak. Round and generous on attack then drives on through the palate. At a stage of prise de bois so drying finish but the oak should integrate in time. Dense rather than complex."

THE WINE ADVOCATE (87 - 89) points
Drink Date: 2024 - 2036
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 20th May 2021
"The 2020 Grand-Puy-Ducasse reveals a deep purple-black color and notes of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, espresso and black olives, giving way to nuances of cedar chest, graphite and wild sage, with a suggestion of Sichuan pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with a sturdy frame of chewy tannins and just enough freshness, taking a bit of a flavor-dip in the mid-palate, finishing a little short and firm."
