Description

We are very pleased to announce the start of the highly anticipated 2020 Bordeaux En-Primeur campaign, one which promises to be as exciting as it is different in our new post-brexit, mid-covid world.

Not having had the chance to travel to Bordeaux to taste we are very reliant on several key factors namely; pedigree, reputation, consistency and critics and the critics seem to like it.

_____

Château Prieuré-Lichine, a large 4ème Cru Classé Margaux estate, is one of the most fragmented in the Médoc with as many as 40 separate parcels of vines scattered throughout the Margaux appellation. Prieuré-Lichine was purchased in 1951 by the great Bordeaux visionary Alexis Lichine - he improved the quality of the wines through investing heavily in new vineyards and by modernising the vinification techniques. He died in 1989 and the estate is now run by his son Sacha, with guru oenologist Michel Rolland acting as consultant.

Prieuré-Lichine has 68 hectares of vineyards and the wine is typically a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It is matured in oak barriques (40% new) for 18 months.

Prieuré-Lichine's relatively high Merlot content gives the wine suppleness and elegance with the wines from the best years possessing a beautifully perfumed nose with a firm structure and good depth of fruit on the palate.

JAMES SUCKLING 95-96 Points
15 Apr, 2021 – "This is really something with pure blackberry and blueberry character. Chewy yet ultra fine tannins. It goes on and on. Could challenge the great 2016."

DECANTER 93 points
Tasted by Jane Anson (at Primeur week tastings in Bordeaux, 01 May 2021)
"Plenty of juicy dripping autumnal fruit, cassis and blueberry with a crack of black pepper and a good lick of saline freshness on the finish that makes you want to take another sip. One of the clear successes, intense and concentrated with balanced tannins and acidity, if some bitter almond overtones. A yield of 32hl/ha. 40% new oak. Harvested right through to October 1st. Tasted twice. Drinking Window 2027 - 2040."

JANCIS ROBINSON 17 points
Drink: 2030 - 2040
65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 40% new oak.
"Black core with purplish rim. Fragrant with the intense aromas of cassis and spicy black plum. A little sweeter-smelling than some but also dark and savoury, with subtle oak spice and char. Even a light floral note entwined with all that dark fruit. The oak is a little more obvious on the palate, as much in the smooth but thick tannins as in the flavour. Full in the mouth but nicely dry and fresh on the finish."
