Description

We are very pleased to announce the start of the highly anticipated 2020 Bordeaux En-Primeur campaign, one which promises to be as exciting as it is different in our new post-brexit, mid-covid world.

Not having had the chance to travel to Bordeaux to taste we are very reliant on several key factors namely; pedigree, reputation, consistency and critics and the critics seem to like it.

_____

It is with great pleasure that we offer Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge. With the wine’s highest score yet from the Wine Advocate, this superb second wine from the celebrated Pessac estate punches much above its weight and offers some of the best value in Bordeaux.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown has highlighted the exceptional quality of the 2020 vintage at Smith Haut Lafitte, writing: “It is clear from tasting the range of wines from Smith Haut Lafitte that they were indeed situated in a sweet-spot location and possessing just the right sort of terroir to hit the absolute heights of greatness this vintage has to offer… These wines are truly breathtaking. Bravo!” For Jane Anson at Decanter, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte displays “the precision that is the mark of the good wines in this vintage”.

Notably, the Grand Vin has received a potential 100 Points from the Wine Advocate. Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte not only offers a great introduction to the estate but in recent years has come a serious wine in its own right, with impressive ageing potential, too. Since taking it on in 1990 in a state of disrepair, owners Daniel and Florence Cathiard have worked wonders here, producing not only some of Bordeaux’s finest wines but in their generosity and hospitality, at which they truly excel.

THE WINE ADVOCATE 91-93 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown
“Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, aging in 30% new barriques, the 2020 Le Petit Haut Lafitte has a deep garnet-purple color, rolling out of the glass with alluring scents of blackberry preserves, Black Forest cake and warm cassis, plus wafts of red roses and cinnamon toast with a hint of dried mint. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers plush tannins and soft acidity to support the generous, juicy black fruits, finishing on a lingering minty note.”

DECANTER 93 Points, Jane Anson
“This is laden with cassis and bilberry - Cabernet dominant, with clearly defined muscles. Juicy and elegant, I love this, it is less approachable now than the Petit Haut de Smith, but hugely enjoyable, and has the precision that is the mark of the good wines in this vintage. A touch of austerity on the finish. 30% new oak. Drinking Window 2025 – 2040.”

JAMES SUCKLING 93-94 Points, James Suckling
“This is a tight, more tannic Petit with a medium to full body and linear, racy phenolics. Blackberries, blueberries and some pine needles and stones. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot.”
