Description

We are delighted to announce the latest releases from Shafer Vineyards, which includes the exceptional 2017 Hillside Select, and the fifth release of TD-9.

Founded in 1978, Shafer Vineyards is situated in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, east of the Silverado Trail and just north of the town of Napa. Although their main focus has always been luxuriant, richly textured Cabernet Sauvignons from their Stags Leap vineyards, they own and farm vineyards also in Carneros.

In recent years, we saw the introduction of TD-9; representing an evolution of Shafer Vineyards Merlot, which had been a cornerstone of their range for 30 years. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, TD-9 is fine and complex, whilst retaining the joyous, plush, generous fruit which characterised their varietal Merlot. The fourth vintage, 2018, is included in this offer.

Low fertility, hillside sites have always been a major priority, as has the adoption of the finest, low vigour rootstocks and clones, leading to extremely low yields of small intensely concentrated grapes. They are also passionate exponents of sustainable farming practices in which they eschew all forms of chemical sprays, and their vineyards teem with natural predators including bats, owls, and a variety of insects. The resulting raw materials are of the highest quality and provide them with numerous, stylistic options in the winery.

Winemaking, in the hands of Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez, also follows a similar philosophy of allowing the fruit full expression and with a minimum of intervention.

Pandemic-allowing the wines will be shipped and available in Spring 2022.

*****

Shafer’s single-vineyard Carneros-grown Chardonnay is produced from small-clustered clones of grapes selected for their low yields and distinctive flavors. Fermentation takes place within individual oak and stainless steel barrels using native yeasts. The wine matures on the lees for 14 months and since it undergoes no malolactic fermentation this Chardonnay retains a lively natural acidity. The vineyard is named for its Red-shouldered Hawks and other birds of prey, who play an important role in Shafer’s sustainable farming practices.

The long, sunny 2019 summer created a beautiful growing season for our Chardonnay. The fruit developed bright color and clean, elegant, and pure aromas and flavours.

“No matter what time of year you open this wine, you’ll have a taste of summer in Napa Valley. Lush aromatics fill the glass with white flowers, lemon zest, honeysuckle, clove, and flint. There is a rich balance of liveliness and density in the mouth with abundant flavours of apricot, white melon, grapefruit peel, ripe pineapple, and minerality, with a beautiful finish that goes on and on.”

THE WINE ADVOCATE Rating: 91-93 points
"The 2019 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch opens with opulent scents of pineapple upside-down cake, green mango and ripe apricots with hints of candied ginger, brioche, allspice and toasted almonds. The rich, creamy-textured palate is laden with tropical fruit and juicy peach flavours, supported by a racy backbone and finishes long and spicy." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 18th Mar 2021.
