Description

We are delighted to announce the latest releases from Shafer Vineyards, which includes the exceptional 2017 Hillside Select, and the fifth release of TD-9.

Founded in 1978, Shafer Vineyards is situated in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, east of the Silverado Trail and just north of the town of Napa. Although their main focus has always been luxuriant, richly textured Cabernet Sauvignons from their Stags Leap vineyards, they own and farm vineyards also in Carneros.

In recent years, we saw the introduction of TD-9; representing an evolution of Shafer Vineyards Merlot, which had been a cornerstone of their range for 30 years. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, TD-9 is fine and complex, whilst retaining the joyous, plush, generous fruit which characterised their varietal Merlot. The fourth vintage, 2018, is included in this offer.

Low fertility, hillside sites have always been a major priority, as has the adoption of the finest, low vigour rootstocks and clones, leading to extremely low yields of small intensely concentrated grapes. They are also passionate exponents of sustainable farming practices in which they eschew all forms of chemical sprays, and their vineyards teem with natural predators including bats, owls, and a variety of insects. The resulting raw materials are of the highest quality and provide them with numerous, stylistic options in the winery.

Winemaking, in the hands of Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez, also follows a similar philosophy of allowing the fruit full expression and with a minimum of intervention.

Pandemic-allowing the wines will be shipped and available in Spring 2022.

One Point Five celebrates lasting bonds, taking its name from the term “a generation and a half,” once coined by John and Doug Shafer to describe their long, accomplished father-and-son partnership. These two worked side by side for decades leading our Stags Leap District winery, always with a spirit of energy and teamwork that continues to inspire everything we do at Shafer today.

98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Malbec, predominately from two Stags Leap District sites — Shafer’s hillside estate vineyard and the “Borderline” vineyard located about two miles south of the winery. Aged for 20 months in 100% new oak barrels (Allier & Troncais). This wine reflects the climate and soils of our Stags Leap District vineyard sites and Shafer’s commitment to meticulous, sustainable farming and quality winemaking.

A lengthy, cool, steady growing season created ideal conditions for the fruit to hang on the vine along time in the summer sun developing rich colour, alluring aromas, and luxuriant flavours.

“In your glass the wine introduces itself with enticing aromas of red and black fruit, baking spice, dark violets, lavender, wet stone, and cinnamon. The promise of all that delicious complexity is fulfilled with a racy Cabernet Sauvignon full of energy – juicy flavours of red plum, cherry, cassis, black tea, and cola – all beautifully packaged together with ripe, bright tannins made for right-now enjoyment as well as long term aging in your cellar.” — 15.3% alcohol. Shafer Vineyards tasting notes by Elias Fernandez, Winemaker

THE WINE ADVOCATE Rating: 93 points
Drink Date: 2021 - 2037
Composed of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five charges out of the gate with notes of crème de cassis, chocolate-covered cherries and blackberry pie plus suggestions of bay leaves, fertile loam and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the mouth is completely coated with juicy black fruit flavors, supported by plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with an invigorating herbal lift. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 18th Mar 2021.
