NOTES ON THE YEAR: The winter of 1979/80 was one of the driest on record. A cool spring delayed flowering slightly and there was some incidence of berry failure in one or two areas. The summer was warm and dry. There was some rainfall on the 19th and 20th September but the weather was dry and extremely hot Temperatures fell again to normal levels at the beginning of October and most of the harvest took place in excellent conditions. The grapes were healthy and evenly matured, with high but not excessive sugar levels. In spite of some rapid fermentations early in the vintage, the musts showed excellent colour and body. In areas which had suffered some berry-failure in Spring, yields were low and the musts were correspondingly rich and concentrated.
