Offley's declaration of the 2016 vintage port was five years since the last release, but according to winemaker Luis Sottomayor, “As soon as the grapes arrived at our winery, we knew this was the best we had seen since the last declaration in 2011”.
The wine has a dense, almost black colour. The aromas are of ripe black fruit, spice, black pepper, clove and cigar box. On the palate it is powerful with firm, ripe tannins and a well-integrated acidity. It has a long and impressive finish where black fruit and spice flavours linger.

"The 2016 Vintage Port is a blend of 35% Touriga Franca, 15% Touriga Nacional and various others, coming in with about 100 grams of residual sugar. This was in bottle for about two months when tasted. Opening with fine, classic flavors, it also has some tannic grip that is rather impressive. As it evolves in the glass, it shows fresher and lifted fruit, the fine intensity of flavor prevailing. Yet it seems even more powerful then. I loved the firm and flavorful finish. This seems like a pretty terrific Offley, although it is probably still bested by its siblings in this report, the Sandeman and the Ferreira (separately listed). It has, perhaps, more power than the Sandeman but not the same expression of fruit. This seemed a little more stolid after tasting those two siblings. In the long run, Sandeman and Ferreira will win, but this is still impressive."
