***** “No question the best sections of Bien Nacido are the American equivalent of Grand Cru sites” – Antonio Galloni *****
It is with great pleasure that we offer the 2018 vintage from Bien Nacido Estate, Santa Barbara County. The Miller family owns many of the best vineyards in California and winemaker Trey Fletcher, a protégé of Ted Lemon at Littorai, takes full advantage of the outstanding fruit to craft the Bien Nacido Estate wines.
If you are new to California, the Bien Nacido wines make a superb introduction. If you are already well acquainted, these beautiful wines do not disappoint!
We are delighted to see that Wine Enthusiast has awarded the 2018 Chardonnay an impressive 95 Points, describing it as “fascinatingly mineral-driven.” Notably, the estate describes the 2018 as “the most floral vintage of these vines in many years. Honeysuckle, fresh apple blossoms and chamomile blend into a more demure lemon oil and citrus peel palate.” The juice is pressed from whole clusters, fermented with native yeasts, and aged in barrels from Meursault, of which 20% are new. Uniquely, Bien Nacido’s Chardonnay remains on its original rootstocks, resulting in an especially precise flavour profile. Annual production is tiny: only 350 cases are produced and as the UK importer, Armit Wines is lucky to receive a small allocation!
95 Points, Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast
“Energetic aromas of lemon peel, crushed chalk, shiso leaf, crushed oyster shells and light mint show on the sizzling nose of this bottling. The palate is fascinatingly mineral-driven, offering wet rocks and more seashells, but also waves of tangerine cream and grapefruit peel. Drink now through 2038.”
91 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“The 2018 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard is super-expressive. Apricot, tangerine oil, chamomile and light tropical accents grace this mid-weight Chardonnay with exotic flair that adds to its appeal. I would prefer to drink the 2018 over the next handful of years, as this appears to be a somewhat light vintage.”
