From Jersey to the Douro Valley: Oliver’s Portuguese Wine Adventure

22nd October 2025

When you work in wine, there’s nothing quite like seeing where it all begins. Recently, our Oliver traded the shores of Jersey for the dramatic slopes of Portugal’s Douro Valley, spending an unforgettable week living and working at the iconic Quinta de la Rosa.

Immersed in Vineyard Life

From the moment he stepped off the train at Pinhão Station, Oliver was thrown into the heart of harvest season. The days began early and ended late, with plenty of hard work in between — from grape sorting and bottling on the production line, to harvesting under the hot Douro sun.

It was hands-on, physical work, but also deeply rewarding. “You can read about winemaking all you like,” Oliver says, “but nothing compares to actually being there — feeling the pace of harvest, watching the fruit transform, and realising just how much passion and precision go into every bottle.”

Beyond the Cellar Doors

His time at Quinta de la Rosa wasn’t limited to production. Oliver also joined the tourism and hospitality team, helping to host tastings and welcome guests from around the world to the estate’s hillside cellars overlooking the Douro River.

He quickly discovered that storytelling plays as big a role as science when it comes to wine. “Guests light up when they hear the family history or taste something that’s been made metres away from where they’re standing. It reminds you that wine is as much about people and place as it is about grapes.”

Exploring the Douro

Of course, it wasn’t all work. During his downtime, Oliver explored the stunning valley by e-mountain bike, winding his way through terraced vineyards and charming villages. Evenings were spent sharing long dinners with the Bergqvist family, whose warmth and hospitality made him feel right at home.

He also took the opportunity to deepen his understanding of Port, visiting Ferreira Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia to learn more about the art of blending and ageing fortified wines - a cornerstone of the region’s heritage.

Bringing It All Back Home

Now back in Jersey, Oliver has returned with a new appreciation for the craftsmanship behind every bottle - and plenty of stories to share. His time in the Douro has added another layer of knowledge and authenticity to the advice and recommendations he can give to our customers.

So next time you’re in our Beaumont store, make sure to say hello. Ask Oliver about his time in Portugal - and maybe discover your next favourite Portuguese wine while you’re at it.
