The 2018 Abyss embodies Champagne Leclerc Briant pioneering philosophy. It’s been aged for 12 months at 60 metres under the sea, at the tumultuous meeting point between the Atlantic Ocean and Channel Sea. The wild tidal movements and dynamism of this dramatic environment have resulted in a truly unique cuvée, with incredible purity, complexity and a beguiling saline character.
The blend is a third of each of the noble Champagne varieties, selected specifically from vineyards grown on raw chalk giving intense mineral drive. The wine is vinified and rested inox & second fill barrique (from Ch. Haut Brion & d’Yquem) for 10 months prior to secondary fermentation, followed by 3 years of lees. Before disgorgement and submersion for 12 months in complete tidal suspension.
This wine carries equal purity of fruit, complexity, and drinkability of all the other Leclerc Briant’s cuvées, but Abyss’s mineral definition is unquestionable & is undeniably stimulating and uplifting. A convergence sunny vintage charm, gleaming fruit and intense minerality. The energetic mineral tension is profound, there is a depth of chalk terroir but also saline details of iodine and rock salt. Delicious golden crumb and gleaming fruit is all suspended in the purist foaming effervescence.
Has to be tasted to be believed. A prestige cuvée like no other, each bottle unique and encrusted with barnacles. Bottled July 2019. Disgorged & submerged June 2022, surfaced July 2023. Only 5000 bottles produced. Drink now to 2038.
