Candied cherries and light caramel with honey and brown sugar on the nose. Dense and rich with plenty of mahogany and nutty undertones to the very sweet palate. Shows lots of age. Sort of dusty and aged, like old furniture in England. Drink now.

This is a beautifully concentrated wine. Rich and dense, it offers dried fruits, spice and intensity. The wine's spirit edge acts as a lift, bringing out acidity, honey, walnuts and a complex perfumed aftertaste. Drink now. — Roger Voss

The NV 30 Years Old Tawny Porto is a typical Douro blend. It was bottled in August 2022 with a Vinolok stopper and 121 grams per liter of residual sugar. Complex and darker in flavors, yet still lively and fresh, this elegant 30 Year first shows its age when it coats the palate and proves how concentrated it is. It is remarkably delicious too, with the dark chocolate and caramel-laced fruit slammed into the palate. The melted chocolate of the 20 Year leans more to dark chocolate here, but it never goes too far in the direction of bitter. If it often seems mature, it never seems old. It's always enlivening, and the structure might be even better that the fine flavor profile. It acquires a tightly wound feel and some power on the juicy, mouthwatering finish. This is a fine success.
The array of age-indicated Tawnies here leads to the presentation of the new 50-Year category. It's worth noting, though, that the last time that I saw the entire array of Sandeman Tawnies, I was a little underwhelmed. For whatever reason—new blends, new releases, no slip-ups in shipping, etc.—these mostly showed better, at least as a group, this time around. The sweet spots here are at the 20 and 30 Year levels, where you get fine quality and decent prices. The 40 Year and 50 Year Tawnies were wines I liked better, but the prices escalated far more quickly than the quality levels. To be sure, that's not unusual as rarity kicks in and causes price spikes, but still. Published: Nov 10, 2022

Chosen by Greg Lambrecht of Coravin as one of the wines for a presentation to celebrate this useful gadget's tenth anniversary. Sandeman's forte is old tawnies and this will not disappoint with its shaded amber, liquid Christmas spices and smooth-as-silk texture. Versatile enough to serve at a wide range of temperatures, before or after meals or with hard cheese, dried fruits and puddings that are not too sweet. (JR)
SUSTAINABLE FARMING.
