Following on from the successful 2021 release Bird in Hand have offered us another small allocation of the new 2022 vintage.

This wine is only exported from Australia for us in Jersey; the rest is kept for their local club members.

Many of the customers who purchased the 2021 last year have been back to tell us how it is the best ‘Burgundy-style’ Chardonnay they have tasted from outside Burgundy, and great value-for-money, two wonderful accolades.

Grapes were handpicked in the early morning from the Bird in Hand Estate vineyard at Woodside and a premium site in Mount Torrens; nestled at around 500m elevation.

Using Bernard clones 76, 95 and 96 from Dijon, Burgundy, the fruit was whole bunch pressed directly to a combination of new (50%) and old French oak barrels, including D&J and Taransaud. Barrels were left to undergo natural malolactic fermentation and stirred weekly to suspend the lees, giving the wine added texture and flavour.

Batches spent 10 months on their yeast lees in barrel prior to blending. Every Chardonnay barrel was then blind tasted and graded by the winemaking team. Larger format oak featured significantly in the final blend.

A collection of 2160 (in 2021 there were 4320 made) individually numbered bottles, 2022 Nest Egg Chardonnay, is a very concentrated and compelling release.

The palate is richly textured with powerful stone fruit, pink grapefruit and honey suckle with tertiary notes developing in bottle such as hazelnut and dried apricot. Lively acidity gives length and freshness to the wine. A delicate and elegant vintage with subtle complexity.
