Description
Domaine de la Vougeraie, located in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, was established in 1999 by Jean-Claude Boisset of the Boisset group. The creation of the winery involved consolidating vineyard holdings from various negociant companies that Boisset had acquired over the years. The name "Vougeraie" reflects the significant vineyards and the family home situated in the village of Vougeot, while the production facilities are housed in the historic cellars once belonging to Claudine Deschamps, Jean-Claude Boisset's wife.
The domaine is committed to high-quality production, using biodynamic farming practices in its premier and grand cru vineyards to ensure the health of the vines and terroir. With carefully limited yields, Domaine de la Vougeraie produces elegant and expressive wines that reflect the unique characteristics of Burgundy, showcasing its dedication to craftsmanship and sustainability in winemaking. The estate's focus on biodynamic principles positions it as a forward-thinking producer in the region, earning acclaim among wine enthusiasts and collectors.
Charlemagne, Grand Cru was a gift from the emperor Charlemagne in 775, this vineyard yields precious little fruit but unparalleled quality. This cuvée comes from two tiny plots, ploughed by horse and harvested only a couple of days apart in 2024. This is more nuanced than previous vintages. It’s slightly subdued, before complex and powerful flavours of lemon zest, apricot and stones unfold.
Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy 92-94 points
:"Pale lemon. The bouquet is discreet but suggests that the wine is all there. Just a touch of sandalwood and a suggestion of gunflint. Plenty of energy here, a tightly knit mineral aspect to the white fruit, with a citrus rinse. Medium length."
Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Nov 2025.
Neal Martin for Vinous 91-93 points
:"The 2024 Charlemagne Grand Cru has a perfumed bouquet with hints of yellow fruit, Golden Delicious and light smoky scents just in the background, unfolding nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with an attractive waxy texture that I want from my Charlemagne. This displays good acidity, quite pure and lightly spiced towards the tender finish. Good potential, though maybe not as long-term as recent vintages."
Drink 2027-2042. Tasted January 2026
