Description

Samuel is making wine at the same brilliant level as Domaine Raveneau but with more consistency and the advantage of a more open, aromatic style when young. His approach in both the vineyards and the cellar is pragmatic and precise, adapting his techniques each year to best suit the vagaries of the weather and quality of fruit.

2024 is a small crop following hail on 1st May (which severely affected the yield in many of the premiers crus in particular Montmains, Vaillons, Séchet and Fourchaume) and an inconsistent flowering. Overall, however, Samuel’s volume is greater than the frost affected 2021 crop as meticulous work in the vineyard throughout the summer avoided significant loss to mildew and other fungal diseases.

Butteaux is an enclave at the top of premier cru Montmains with a distinctive vein of blue clay soil. Fermented in 500 litre oak barrels, this is a splendid wine which combines power and concentration with thrilling minerality. Drink 2028-2033.
