Description
GUIDALBERTO 2024
Guidalberto celebrates its 25th vintage this release and stands out as one of the finest value wines available today. Conceived in the 1990s as a Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon blend rooted in the iconic Bolgheri terroir, it has earned growing critical acclaim. The gentle grip of its tannins means that it can be enjoyed sooner than Sassicaia, and for this reason it features on so many of the best restaurant wine lists in London and around the world. But as our private collectors will know, it is quite capable of cellaring, too.

The Tenuta San Guido 2024 Guidalberto shows spice and drive through the mid-palate, opening with fragrant notes of cherry shaped by its equal blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is lively and punchy in character with lifted aromatics and fine definition, supported by bright acidity that keeps the palate fresh and agile. Tannins show a touch of dryness, adding grip and structure, while the overall impression remains energetic and easy to appreciate.

Appellation: Toscana I.G.T.
The Harvest: Grape picking within Tenuta San Guido began on August 28 with the Merlot parcels. Harvesting continued with Cabernet Sauvignon and concluded on October 5 with the oldest and highest-lying vineyards.
The Wine: Guidalberto 2024 reveals an intense ruby red hue and an aromatic complexity enriched by the subtle vegetal nuances typical of the vintage. In its youth, it offers an immediately inviting nose while hinting at a significant aromatic evolution over the medium to long term. The bouquet opens with fresh vegetal notes that, with aeration, broaden into hints of cassis, delicate citrus tones of bergamot, and well-integrated wild berry fruit. On the palate, the wine strikes for its elegance and freshness, with a lively energy that drives the sip and a precise, long finish always under the sign of the finesse that characterises the vintage. The structure, more restrained than in other years, enhances immediate and gratifying drinkability, supported by a saline note that lends verticality. Three key elements define Guidalberto 2024: its aromatic complexity; the saline and Mediterranean scrub notes already perceptible on the nose; and a vibrant freshness that, together with perfectly integrated tannins and a clear, sapid fruit expression, accompanies the wine throughout the tasting.
The Season in Brief: The 2024 vintage opened with a cold, rainy autumn, followed by a mild, dry winter, resulting in earlier heat accumulation than in 2023. Rainfall between late February and March replenished the soil’s water reserves without hindering the regular vegetative awakening. April began warm and bright, prompting an early and remarkably uniform budbreak; only in the second half of the month did a return of cooler, wetter weather slow development, though without causing frost damage. May and June offered ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. Summer was warm—often above average—yet well ventilated and marked by significant diurnal shifts, which supported a steady, balanced ripening of the grapes. July brought an early veraison, while August, despite maintaining high temperatures, was interrupted by a mid-month weather front that temporarily slowed phenolic maturation. During this phase, Merlot required crop thinning to restore balance in ripening, resulting in reduced yields. Cabernet Sauvignon, thanks to its later cycle, was not significantly affected. From the second half of September onward, the weather stabilised, with sunny days and northern winds that helped dry the grapes and complete phenolic maturation in harmony with technical ripeness. Optimal vegetative conditions, combined with marked temperature variations, enhanced the aromatic complexity that defines the 2024 profile.
