Description

I am delighted to announce the release of the following wines from Zuccardi: Fósil 2023 and Botánico 2023.

Fósil and Botánico 2023 Chardonnays have established themselves as two of the best Chardonnays from South America, regularly receiving the highest or joint-highest critic reception and scores. These wines offer tremendous value and quality, while also exhibiting the unique and complex terroir of the beautiful and diverse Uco Valley. What separates the two wines in style is the terroir; neither wine sees any oak in the winemaking, with both wines being fermented and aged in concrete with no malolactic fermentation.

The Fosil 2023 is the third vintage in a string of highly rated releases from Zuccardi, scoring a very consistent 97 points from Joaquín Hidalgo (Vinous) and placing it up there with the very best whites in the market. Fosil 2023 displays the tension, energy, and minerality that have become the Zuccardi trademarks. This style is driven by the extreme cool climate of the 1400m vineyards and their calcareous soils.

The Botanico is a newer wine from Zuccardi and the 2023 is their third, and best, release to date. The wine differs from Fosil showing a broader, richer pallet when compared to the Fosil, due to its lower altitude and sandier soils, but still possess the Zuccardi hallmarks of freshness, energy, and a sense of place.

• Zuccardi’s story began in 1963 with Alberto "Tito" Zuccardi’s innovative irrigation experiments in Mendoza, laying the foundation for the family’s winemaking journey.
• Now led by the family’s third generation, Sebastián Zuccardi, who continues the family legacy by crafting wines rooted in the unique terroir of the Uco Valley.
• Focus is on creating wines that emphasize the interplay of soil, climate, and grape variety to express the identity of each vineyard or parcel and a genuine sense of place.
• Key Wines:
• Fósil San Pablo Chardonnay: High-altitude vineyard, cold climate, calcareous soils.
• Botánico Gualtallary Chardonnay: Complex, elegant wine, with a richer style.
• Over a decade of meticulous work in vineyard and soil diversity has allowed for precision harvesting and wines that reflect the geological and climatic diversity of the Uco Valley.

“A rising star in the Familia Zuccardi portfolio, the 2023 Chardonnay Botánico comes from their vineyards in Gualtallary, Tupungato. Fermented and aged in concrete, the warm 2023 vintage saw harvest occur nearly a week earlier than in 2022, as early as the beginning of February. The 2023 reveals subtle herbal aromas of vermouth, lavender and herbs with a hint of hops. Broad and fairly rich, with good tension on the palate, it finishes with a touch of green apple. A true reflection of its origins, its chalky texture defines the mouthfeel.”
96pts, Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous, Nov 2024
