THE WINE ADVOCATE 100 points !!
Drink Date: 2020 - 2065
Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Cos d'Estournel features a myriad of wonderfully intense notes, including blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly, kirsch and blueberry compote with hints of rose hip tea, sautéed herbs, underbrush, pencil shavings and Indian spices. Full-bodied, rich and opulently fruited in the mouth, it has beautifully plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and very spicy.
Blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon 33% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc.
JAMES SUCKLING 100 points !!!
This is amazing as always with layers of fruit and firm, velvety tannins. Full body, incredible depth of fruit and length. Currants, raspberries and Indian spices. It goes on for minutes. A monumental Cos. Greatest ever from here. Better in five years, but amazing.
WINE ENTHUSIAST 95 points
94-96 Barrel sample. A hugely rich wine, where the tannins seem initially lost in the overwhelming fruit. It has power and concentration, showing its alcohol a little. There is great intensity, but an edge of Portiness from the super-rich fruit. — Roger Voss

This is a vintage that was naturally very generous, sporting a yield of around 35hl/ha. It's without question more spicy, peppery and exotic than many vintages, and it is still obvious why there were disagreements among the critics over this wine. It was made towards the end of the era when the winemaking team at Cos d’Estournel systematically de-leafed and pushed the Cabernet Sauvignon to be as ripe as possible - harvest finished 10 October - and perhaps it strays a touch over the line. It's undoubtedly opulent, fleshy and weighty without being heavy, with a rich texture, and when it was younger I struggled to find the signature characteristics of the appellation, but the freshness of St-Estèphe terroir is more obvious at this point. Plenty to savour in this wine.
