Description

Château La Pointe’s lovely 2 hectares of grounds and centuriesold trees have made this an outstandingly beautiful property for over a century and a half. It gained recognition as an important winegrowing estate in the 19th century. One of the largest vineyards in Pomerol, La Pointe underwent a major renovation starting in 2008 in order to enhance its image and achieve the terroir’s full potential.

A detailed soil survey made it possible to maximise drainage and restructure the vineyards in the interest of quality. The Cabernet Sauvignon vines were uprooted and the yields of Cabernet Franc adapted in order to express the finesse and elegance that make La Pointe one of the mostly highly-reputed wines on the Right Bank.

A major renovation of the cellars was also undertaken. This makes it possible to ferment grapes from each plot separately to fine-tune winemaking, as well as respect stringent environmental standards.

The internationally respected consultant, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, co-owner of Château Angélus, now shares his expertise with the Château La Pointe team.

THE WINE ADVOCATE 91-93 points
Drink Date: 2025 - 2040 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 20th May 2021
"Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 La Pointe offers up notes of baked black and red plums, cherry preserves and fresh blackberries, plus wafts of crushed rocks, underbrush and black truffles. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of ripe black fruit flavors, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and earthy."

JAMES SUCKLING 92-93 points
"Very aromatic with blackberries, dried flowers and wet earth. It’s medium-bodied with creamy, round tannins that are tight-grained. Fresh finish."

DECANTER 93 points

"Clarity and depth to the blueberry and raspberry fruit, they have done an excellent job of working with a hot dry vintage to still deliver this estate's trademark charm. Located on soils with plenty of gravel that needed careful attention, and yet this delivers a juicy, fresh core with finely shaped tannins and a moreish salinity on the finish. An excellent success. A higher percentage of Cabernet Franc than in the past, as was true also for the 2019 vintage and will be going forward. La Pointe makes wines that are often not sufficiently recognised within the starry appellation of Pomerol, and yet are consistently enjoyable and full of enticing charm. 3.63pH. A yield of 38hl/ha. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036."

JANCIS ROBINSON 16 points
DRINK: 2026 - 2032 - 76% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc. 35-year-old vines.
"Darkest cherry red with purple rim. More red-fruited than most of the Pomerols just tasted, perhaps the Cab Franc influence, though with only a hint of its usual leafiness. Smooth, rounded, chocolate-textured tannins, and noticeable acidity. Not fully meshed though the fruit is ripe and refreshing, which is not always easy to balance."
