Description
IN BRIEF
Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2006 is a restrained, noble Pauillac combining power with hallmark finesse and precision. Deep garnet with a brick rim, it offers blackcurrant and blackberry compote with cedar, tobacco leaf and pencil lead, then forest floor, leather and graphite. Medium plus to full bodied with a satin texture, fine tannins give backbone while blackcurrant, plum and black cherry unfold with savoury olive tapenade and cured meat. Bright acidity drives a long saline and graphite finish. Approachable with decanting yet will age further. Drink 2026 to 2045. Pair with roast lamb, beef Wellington or aged cheeses. Critics: Decanter 96 "rich and dense"; Wine Enthusiast 96 "power and density"; Wine Advocate 95 "impressive fruit intensity." Elegant, precise and utterly compelling in the glass.
ABOUT THIS WINE
Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1er Grand Cru Classe Pauillac 2006 is a restrained and noble claret that blends Pauillac power with the estate’s hallmark finesse and precision. The colour is a clear deep garnet with a brick rim that signals early tertiary development while retaining a vibrant core. The nose is composed and finely layered, opening with blackcurrant and blackberry compote tempered by notes of cedar, tobacco leaf and polished pencil lead. With aeration tertiary aromas of forest floor, leather and dried herb emerge alongside subtle graphite and crushed stone that underline the vineyard’s mineral signature.
On the palate the wine is medium plus to full bodied with a satin like texture and a beautifully integrated tannic frame. Fine grained tannins give backbone and length without aggression, allowing flavours of blackcurrant, plum and black cherry to unfold with poise. Savoury elements of olive tapenade, cured meat and a gentle soy like reduction add complexity, while discreet oak influences of cedar, clove and dark chocolate provide spice and structure rather than dominance. Acidity is balanced and refreshing, delivering energy through the mid palate and guiding the flavours to a long, saline and graphite edged finish.
The 2006 vintage in Bordeaux produced wines of clarity and precision rather than overt opulence, and at Lafite this leads to a wine of architectural refinement and ageing potential. This bottle is approachable now with careful decanting to open the aromatics, yet it will continue to evolve in bottle as tertiary notes harmonise further.
Drink 2026 to 2045, peaking 2032 to 2040. Serve with roast lamb, beef Wellington, aged hard cheeses or refined game dishes such as roasted venison to complement the wine’s savoury depth, structure and subtle floral lift.

Part of The year that could have been great - Our expert selects the best 2006 Bordeaux wines
Drinking Window: 2025 - 2075
The 2006 Lafite was among the favourites at our recent retrospective of the vintage. Surprisingly approachable, I found it incredibly aromatic on the initial attack, with lush notes of mulberry, currant, and spice. The texture is rich and dense, with supple tannins, a plump feel and an impressively long finish. 'A bit of baby fat', I wrote on the day - surprising, since it is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon. It must be severe sorting and strict selection - apparently, only 42% of the harvest made it into the grand vin. This wine will continue to improve almost indefinitely.
WINE ENTHUSIAST 96 points
As so often with Lafite, it is power that marks this wine. That, and density of texture. The additional element in this vintage, and at this stage of the wine's development, is a dominant wood element. The vanilla and tannins from the wood match well with the concentrated tannins of the fruit, which is dark, dense and tight. This is a wine for long-term aging: in 15 years this will have superb richness. — Roger Voss

Good full ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of cassis, graphite and cedar chips, lifted by peppery and floral high notes. Densely packed and superconcentrated but light on its feet, with compelling flavors of spicy berries and minerals. The very long, slow-building finish stains the palate with flavor. Very backward but not austere; and unlike some recent vintages of Lafite, which could appear deceptively light in the early going, this showcases its density and ripeness from the outset. I have the impression that most of the less-ripe fruit was declassified into the far lighter Carruades de Lafite (87), which shows a distinctly cool style for the year.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London and then blind at Farr Vintners tasting. The 2006 Château Lafite-Rothschild offers impressive fruit intensity on the nose, although it does not have the precision of the 2006 Mouton-Rothschild. Red berry fruits intermingle with rose petals and sous-bois scents - very typical Lafite bouquet where less can be more. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and a keen line of acidity. It is certainly very well balanced with graphite-tinged black fruit, but whereas Mouton-Rothschild possesses that peacock's tail, Lafite remains linear. Nevertheless, the sophistication really comes through here. It is a Lafite-Rothschild that may spring a few surprises down the line, one of those wines that keeps drawing you back. Understated class. Tasted April 2016.

The aromas of blue fruit, iodine, sweet tobacco and lavender follow through nicely to the palate that’s medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins and a long, cool finish. Still a little tight, but show great finesse and pedigree. Just starting to open now.
