Description

Chateau Pontet Canet 5eme Grand Cru Classe Pauillac 2006 is a richly textured and impeccably balanced claret that shows the estate’s biodynamic energy married to classic Pauillac structure. The colour is deep garnet with an orange tinged rim that signals mature evolution while the core remains concentrated. The nose opens with blackcurrant, black cherry and damson, then broadens to reveal layers of cedar, graphite and cigar box; with aeration the bouquet develops forest floor, truffle and a savoury note of pressed leather, together with a fine mineral seam.

On the palate the wine is full bodied yet lithe, offering a dense, expansive mid palate framed by polished, ripe tannins that provide backbone without austerity. Primary dark fruit is generous and ripe but kept fresh by bright acidity and a precise saline thread that runs through the core. Mid palate development brings olive tapenade, smoked meat and a discreet soy like reduction, while oak seasoning contributes clove, dark chocolate and a warm spice that integrates seamlessly with the fruit. The texture is almost velvety but with a firm structural spine that promises further evolution.

The 2006 vintage produced wines of clarity and refinement rather than sheer opulence, and at Pontet Canet this resulted in a wine that combines immediate appeal with substantial ageing potential. The estate’s biodynamic practices and meticulous élevage are evident in the wine’s vibrancy and textural complexity. Expect tertiary notes of leather, cedar and forest undergrowth to continue knitting with fruit over the next decade.

Drink 2026 to 2040, peaking 2028 to 2036. Serve after a cautious decant with roast beef, beef Wellington, lamb with rosemary, venison, mushroom and truffle dishes, or mature hard cheeses. This Pontet Canet 2006 is a powerful yet refined Pauillac that rewards patience and pairs beautifully with robust, savoury cuisine.

Top wine of the vertical. Deep, violet hue. Even if the nose is slightly closed, initially, what pure fruit! A degree higher in alcohol than the 2015, but superb balance. The pristine fruit, fine-grained tannins, focus and precision lead to an outstanding finish, surpassing even the 2010. It has the sumptuousness of the 2015, but the arc and tension of the 2010. Great capacity for ageing. Aged 50% new oak, 35% amphora.

VINOUS 94 points
Saturated medium ruby. Inky cassis, black raspberry, graphite and pungent minerality on the very ripe nose. Dense, rich and silky, with a brooding inky minerality and an almost liqueur-like dark fruit sweetness leavened by a savory peppery element. This very ripe, deep and concentrated wine boasts wonderful lushness without any undue weight thanks to its sheer energy. Like its neighbor Mouton-Rothschild, Pontet-Canet's 2006 conveys a powerful impression of soil character. Finishes with serious dusty tannins and superb lingering sweetness. Should be long-lived. - Stephen Tanzer

THE WINE ADVOCATE 93-95 points
'One can’t say enough about the extraordinary quality proprietor Alfred Tesseron has achieved at Pontet-Canet over the last decade. The 2006 is another massive wine that may be as backward and concentrated as its nearby neighbour, Mouton Rothschild. Boasting a dense purple/black color in addition to aromas of creme de cassis, incense, burning embers/charcoal, and pain grille, it is monstrous in the mouth with huge flavor concentration, extremely high tannins, and significant extract. Tesseron’s goal appears to be a 50+ year wine. The 2006 requires a decade of patience. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2040+.'

ABOUT CHATEAU PONTET-CANET
Château Pontet Canet is a distinguished Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, located in the Pauillac commune on Bordeaux’s left bank. Renowned for its powerful yet refined wines, the estate has become a reference for biodynamic and terroir focused viticulture in the Médoc. Pontet Canet combines ripe, structured fruit with pronounced minerality and a textural elegance that rewards patient cellaring.

The property has been owned by the Tesseron family since 1975, when Alfred Tesseron acquired the domaine and embarked on a long term programme of vineyard renewal and technical investment. Under family stewardship Pontet Canet has pursued a rigorous quality brief that balances respect for classical Pauillac structure with modern ecological practice and precise cellar technique.

Vineyards cover around 81 hectares planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Soils are classic gravel over deep subsoil, delivering drainage and concentration while allowing roots to develop depth and complexity. Over recent decades the estate moved progressively towards organic and then biodynamic viticulture, emphasising green cover, composting and low intervention in the vineyard to enhance soil life and to express parcel distinction. Canopy management, yield control and selective hand harvesting are central to the viticultural regime.

Winemaking is parcel by parcel and oriented towards preserving site identity. Fruit is sorted rigorously, vinified in small lots with temperature control and managed extraction, then aged in French oak with careful barrel selection appropriate to each parcel. The cellar team places strong emphasis on blending trials and tasting to determine final assemblages that combine power, freshness and longevity.

Stylistically Pontet Canet is often described as intense and layered, showing blackcurrant, dark plum, graphite, cedar and complex savoury notes alongside a saline mineral thread. Fine grain tannins and persistent acidity give the wines structure and ageing potential. Through integrated, environmentally minded viticulture and meticulous cellar work, Château Pontet Canet has established itself as a benchmark Pauillac that marries concentration with terroir clarity.
