Description

Château Poujeaux is a leading Cru Bourgeois property that consistently produces wines of Grand Cru Classé quality. Poujeaux is located in the commune of Moulis and can trace its history back to the 16th century. It has been owned and run since 1921 by the Theil family and today it is brothers Philippe and François who are at the helm.

Poujeaux's 52-hectare vineyard is located in a single plot on a well-sited gravel ridge just outside the village of Poujeaux. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%).

The legendary 1953 Poujeaux was famously mistaken by Baron Rothschild for Lafite, and remains the finest wine the property has ever produced. Poujeaux wines are typically deeply coloured, wonderfully perfumed on the nose and display a seductive, creamy texture with densely concentrated cassis fruits on the palate.

DECANTER 92 points
Drinking Window: 2027 - 2039
Clean and crisp, but tight and compact, initially a gorgeous burst of blue fruit with cool stony edges, dense but refined, before quite firm tannins come into play. I like the energy, adds a touch of vibrancy to the fruit which is appealing before the really quite herbal and spiced tannins take over. Nice potential but not as generous and easy as some. Taught but purposeful. Harvest 15-30 September. Yield of 40hl/ha. 3.85pH. Ageing in French oak for 12 months, 33% new. Derenoncourt consultants. - Georgina Hindle 04/23

THE WINE ADVOCATE 88 - 90 points
The 2022 Poujeaux offers up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil shavings and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated palate that opens with a velvety attack, segueing into a firmer, more austere mid-palate and finish that depress my score. If this rounds out with élevage, my review will prove conservative. - William Kelley 04/23

JAMES SUCKLING 94-95 points
13 Apr, 2023 – A medium-bodied red with crunchy fruit and tight tannin structure. Juicy acidity coming through. Chewy and solid at the end. Closed and pretty tannins.

Drink 2028 - 2042
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Cask sample.
Deep crimson hue. Discreet, dark-fruit nose. Tannins fine but firm. Long and persistent. Reserved at this stage but solid structure for ageing.
