Description
IN BRIEF
Château Sociando Mallet 1990 opens with a mature, composed bouquet: dried black cherry, pressed plum and stewed blackcurrant, layered with tobacco leaf, cedar and worn leather, while forest floor, damp earth and graphite minerality appear with time. Medium–full-bodied, the palate retains backbone and tensile acidity despite softened structure; evolved dark preserves, black tea and savoury olive sit beneath mellow, powdery tannins. The mid-palate offers dried fig, cocoa nib, tobacco spice and a discreet truffle note, each element integrating with poise. Oak is fully integrated, lending warm cedar and vanillin warmth. Texture is velvety and tactile, the finish long, saline and savoury with leather and sous-bois echoes. Drink now or over the next few years. Top scores: Wine Spectator 96; Vinous 93; WA 93.
ABOUT THIS WINE
Château Sociando Mallet, Haut Médoc 1990 opens with a mature, composed bouquet that announces a wine in full, developed phase while still carrying vivid fruit memory. The nose shows dried black cherry, pressed plum and stewed blackcurrant, layered with tobacco leaf, cedar and worn leather. Forest floor, damp earth and a clear graphite minerality emerge with time in the glass, while dried herbs, a whisper of bay and a touch of camphor add complexity and finesse.
On the palate the wine is medium to full bodied, the structure softened by age yet retaining coherent backbone and tensile acidity. Primary fruit has evolved to concentrated dark preserve and black tea notes, framed by savoury olive and a fine thread of balsamic reduction. Tannins are mellow and powdery, offering gentle grip rather than force, allowing layered secondary flavours to take centre stage. Mid palate notes include dried fig, cocoa nib, tobacco spice and a hint of truffle, each element weaving into the next with measured poise.
The oak is fully integrated, providing warm cedar and vanillin warmth that complements rather than competes with the matured fruit. Texture is velvety and tactile, the mouthfeel elegant and balanced, carrying through to a long saline finish that returns to dried cherry, a pleasant bitter cocoa note and subtle mineral whispers. There is a lingering savoury echo of leather and sous bois that remains after the last sip.
Drink now to enjoy its developed complexity, or enjoy over the next few years if stored under ideal conditions. Serve at 16 to 18°C, decanted to lift aromatics, with slow roast beef, braised lamb, mushroom dishes or mature hard cheeses which sit comfortably with the wine’s tertiary profile.
Château Sociando Mallet 1990 displays the rewards of careful ageing, offering a harmonious balance of tertiary complexity, restrained fruit and a poised, savoury finish that speaks of Médoc character and longevity.

Amazing wine for the vintage. Black-ruby color. Stupendous aromas of crushed berries, currants, cherries and minerals. Full-bodied, with superconcentration of fruit and wonderfully polished tannins. Goes on and on.
VINOUS 93 points
The 1990 Sociando-Mallet is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc picked between September 13 and October 2. It offers wonderful scents of red berry fruit, potpourri, lavender, and a touch of rooibos and garrigue, all very well defined and gaining intensity in the glass. The medium-bodied palate shows good depth and harmony, and the acidity is very well judged. This is a spicier-styled Sociando-Mallet with a healthy dose of black pepper, sage and curry leaf, while the finish is structured and offers very good length. This always had a good reputation and I understand why. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet. - Neal Martin

One of the reference point vintages for this northern Médoc estate, the 1990 Sociando-Mallet offers up a boisterous bouquet of cassis, pencil shavings, loamy soil, smoke and spices. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and fleshy, it's beautifully balanced, with a generous core of fruit, melted tannins and lively acids. It would embarrass any number of classified growths in this vintage—as is so often the case!

ABOUT CHATEAU SOCIANDO-MALLET
Château Sociando Mallet, situated in the Haut Médoc commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, is an influential left bank estate known for producing richly textured, classically structured wines that blend power with refinement. The property rose to prominence under the stewardship of Jean Gautreau from the mid 20th century, who transformed a modest holding into a benchmark producer through systematic vineyard expansion, improved viticulture and a focus on quality that rivalled classified growths despite the château’s unclassified status. Planted on deep gravelly soils with pockets of clay and limestone, the vineyards benefit from good drainage and a temperate Atlantic influence that helps preserve acidity and promote steady phenolic ripening, favouring Cabernet Sauvignon while allowing Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to contribute complexity.
Vineyard management at Sociando Mallet emphasises parcel selection, careful canopy work and controlled yields to ensure concentration and typicity, with ongoing replanting and clonal choice aimed at increasing consistency across vintages. In the winery modern techniques are combined with traditional rigour, grapes receiving thorough sorting before fermentation in temperature controlled vats, with extraction tailored to achieve ripe tannins and aromatic definition. Elevage takes place in French oak, a measured proportion of which is new each year, to add structure and savoury spice while preserving fruit purity.
The signature wine typically displays deep black fruit, cassis and plum, complemented by graphite, forest floor and tobacco nuances, supported by a firm structured tannic frame and a refreshingly saline finish that speaks to Médoc terroir. Sociando Mallet’s wines reward medium to long term ageing, evolving towards complex tertiary notes while second and reserve cuvées provide earlier accessibility without losing the estate’s muscular elegance. Respected for consistency and value, Château Sociando Mallet remains a standard bearer for Haut Médoc style and ambition.
