JAMES SUCKLING 95 points
Stunning cranberry and sour-cherry nose with almost no perceptible oak. Concentrated, sleek and vibrant, but not at all edgy, this is a unique pinot noir, both in the Alsace and global contexts. Long, crisp mineral finish. Enormous aging potential. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

ABOUT DOMAINE OSTERTAG
Domaine Ostertag is a prominent winery situated in the Alsace region of France, renowned for its innovative approach to winemaking and its deep commitment to expressing the nuances of terroir. Founded in the 1960s by André Ostertag, the domaine has gained a reputation as one of the most respected and revolutionary producers in Alsace, consistently pushing the boundaries of traditional winemaking.

Spanning 13 hectares, Domaine Ostertag cultivates vines across 75 diverse plots in five villages, reflecting a mosaic of terroirs that define the Alsatian landscape. André Ostertag's winemaking philosophy centres on capturing the essence of these terroirs rather than conforming to the conventional typicity associated with grape varieties. His categorization of wines is both unique and poetic, comprising Vins de Fruit—wines that express vibrant fruit character, Vins de Pierre—wines that embody the specific terroir, and Vin de Temps—wines that celebrate the influence of time and weather, particularly in the development of botrytis.

Renowned for fermenting the majority of his wines completely dry, Ostertag's creations boast exceptional versatility, making them perfect companions for a variety of foods. He employs a thoughtful use of oak, sourced exclusively from the Vosges Mountains, to subtly enhance the traditional Alsatian varietals, particularly the Pinot family. Unlike the traditional foudres, he opts for barriques, imparting greater depth and complexity to his wines.

Domaine Ostertag transitioned to biodynamic farming in 1997, rejecting formulaic and scientifically engineered approaches to winemaking. This commitment to natural farming practices has positioned Ostertag as a key player in the natural wine community, garnering acclaim for the brilliance of his wines.

As of the 2017 vintage, André has passed the winemaking reins to his son, Arthur Ostertag, who has travelled extensively to hone his craft and has worked alongside his father for several vintages. This transition ensures that the legacy of Domaine Ostertag continues, blending tradition with a fresh perspective.

With a focus on terroir expression, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability, Domaine Ostertag remains a beacon of excellence in the Alsace wine region, offering wines that are a true reflection of their origin and the artistry behind their creation.
