Description
Bruno Giacosa cherished his Barbaresco Asili vineyard as the closest to his heart, and the 2019 vintage beautifully reflects this sentiment. It features expressive aromas of wild cherry, floral notes, and minerality, showcasing a fine and fluid palate with subtle density that captures the vintage's taut richness, balanced by freshness and sculpted tannins. James Suckling awarded it 98 points, praising its sweet aromas of tangerines, ripe strawberries, and cherries, coupled with a full-bodied palate and sleek, dense tannins leading to a vivid finish. The Wine Advocate also rated it 95 points for its exceptional clarity and focus, emphasising wild fruit, violets, and candied orange peel, suggesting it needs a few more years in the glass to fully develop its potential.
*****
Of all his vineyards Bruno Giacosa described Asili as being closest to his heart. This is beautifully expressive on the nose, with notes of wild cherry, a floral lift and minerality. It’s fine and fluid on the palate, with a subtle density capturing the taut richness of the vintage, balanced by freshness and sculpted tannins. Drink 2028 – 2038.
JAME SUCKLING 98 points
Sweet and succulent aromas of tangerines, freshly cut ripe strawberries, cherries and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate with sleek and dense tannins that run the length of the wine and then fan out into a dense, vivid finish of fruit. It’s chewy and seriously structured with finesse and energy. Silky texture. This needs at least four or five years to come together and open.

With the white label, the 2019 Barbaresco Asili is a wine of exceptional clarity and focus. That brightness is applied to the bouquet and the mouthfeel alike, where the wine feels streamlined, elegant and tight. Asili is redolent of wild fruit, violets and candied orange peel. This wine was bottled in 2021 and needs a few more years in glass before it really starts to unwind and soften.
