ABOUT THIS WINE
Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano is a joyous, crowd pleasing Sangiovese that feels like sunshine in a glass. The colour is a bright ruby that catches the light and makes you want another sip. On the nose the wine is immediately fruity and inviting with juicy sour cherry, wild strawberry and a touch of red plum, while a floral thread of violet and a hint of rose petal keeps things pretty. Give it a swirl and you will find a cheeky savoury note of Mediterranean scrub and a little leather that adds personality without being bossy.
In the mouth the wine is medium to medium plus in weight with a generous yet refined mid palate. Ripe red fruit takes centre stage, Morello cherry and raspberry leading the parade, while a savoury backbone of black olive and cured meat gives the wine appetite friendly momentum. The tannins are smooth and approachable and lively acidity keeps the finish fresh so the wine never feels heavy. Oak is used with a light touch, contributing gentle spice and a warm vanilla whisper rather than domination. There is a pleasant hint of dried herb and a faint orange zest note that brightens the finish and makes the wine addictive with food.
This is a wine built for company and food rather than lecture. Drink it now for instant pleasure or enjoy it over the next few years as the fruit softens and the savoury notes deepen. Drink 2026 to 2030. It is a brilliant partner for slightly rustic dishes: roast pork, grilled lamb cutlets, pappardelle with wild boar ragout, mushroom based dishes or a simple plate of salami and aged pecorino. Also ideal with a wood fired pizza, a hearty bean stew or spicy tomato based pasta.
Unpretentious, generous and endlessly drinkable, Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano is one of those bottles that makes friends at the table and leaves everyone smiling.

The Fattoria le Pupille 2024 Morellino di Scansano is led by Sangiovese with small percentages of Alicante and Ciliegiolo that bring extra brightness and energy. In Maremma, complex soils of volcanic deposits layered with ancient marine sediments define the character of the region, and for this wine, the Sangiovese is planted on sandstone soils that enhance elegance and aromatic lift, while other parcels feature pietra serena, red clays and limestone matched carefully to the appropriate variety. The bouquet offers redcurrant, myrtle and fragrant herbal notes of fresh rosemary and thyme, evoking the herb garden that lines the walkway to the estate’s newly inaugurated tasting room and visitor center. This wine offers phenomenal value.

The nose is a mix of crunchy red fruit and flowers, as cherries mingle with peonies, plus a touch of orange peel for texture and density. Strawberries and raspberries join more cherries on the palate, with earth and bitter citrus underneath. Fresh and vibrant. — Danielle Callegari

ABOUT FATTORIA LE PUPILLE
Fattoria Le Pupille is a spirited Maremma estate that brought Morellino di Scansano from local curiosity to international conversation. The property was transformed from a modest family holding into a bold modern operation by Elisabetta Geppetti, who since the mid 1980s has led the estate with a mix of ambition and practicality. Today the business remains family centred: Elisabetta is supported by her children, Clara Gentili and Ettore Arturo Rizzi, who share responsibility for commercial strategy, vineyard care and cellar decisions.
Vineyards sit on warm, sunlit slopes at roughly 300 to 350 metres above sea level on predominantly sandy and arenaceous soils that give the wines a swaggering ripeness balanced by coastal freshness. The estate controls substantial acreage, with around eighty hectares under vine planted to Sangiovese, Alicante, Ciliegiolo and a selection of international varieties. Low yields, rigorous canopy work and selective hand picking are standard practice so that each parcel can deliver personality rather than volume.
Winemaking today is a family affair with Ettore Arturo Rizzi prominent in technical oversight. He works alongside the in house team to blend traditional Tuscan instincts with precise modern control. The cellar approach varies by cuvée: Morellino bottlings favour bright fruit and immediate charm, while top IGT wines such as Saffredi are treated with extended maceration and patient élevage to coax power, tannic grip and layered complexity. The team aims for gentle extraction and aromatic lift rather than brute force, so the wines feel generous yet tuned.
The range moves effortlessly from everyday food friendly reds to cult IGT bottlings and single vineyard cuvées. Saffredi sits at the playful apex: dense, plush and undeniably modern, yet grounded in a sense of place. Lighter cuvées show ripe cherry, wild herb and saline lift, making them superb with coastal cuisine, grilled meats and rustic Tuscan fare.
Le Pupille’s charm lies in its blend of family heart and experimental spirit. The Geppetti family remain adventurous, commissioning small trials, exploring parcel selection and refining blends, all while keeping the wines approachable and expressive. The result is a Maremma house that is as ready for a convivial table as it is for serious cellaring.
