*****

Kanonkop is a celebrated winery located in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, renowned for producing high-quality red wines, particularly those made from Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Established in 1926 by the Smit family, Kanonkop has a rich heritage and has become one of South Africa's premier wine estates, recognized for its commitment to excellence and craftsmanship.

The winery is situated on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, where the unique terroir, characterised by iron-rich soils and a Mediterranean climate, contributes to the quality and complexity of the wines. Kanonkop practices sustainable farming methods to ensure the health of the vineyards, while also focusing on low yields to enhance the concentration of flavours in the grapes.

Kanonkop's flagship wine, Kanonkop Estate Wine, is a well-regarded blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, showcasing rich dark fruit flavours, firm tannins, and a long, elegant finish. The winery's Pinotage, often seen as the estate's signature wine, is celebrated for its unique profile, offering vibrant berry fruit and earthy nuances.

With numerous accolades and high ratings from critics, Kanonkop has established itself as a leading name in South African winemaking, appealing to wine enthusiasts and collectors seeking expressive and high-quality wines from the Cape Winelands.

Kanonkop Estate have released a limited edition Paul Sauer from the 2009 vintage, specially labelled and packaged in a striking gift box to commemorate 50 years of the Kanonkop wine brand from 1973-2023. It is a fitting tribute to their winemakers Jan Boland Coetzee, Beyers Truter and Abrie Beeslaar who have crafted their wines over five decades, as well as to the legendary founder, Paul Sauer. A highly awarded wine, it received the prestigious Pichon Longueville Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine at the IWSC in 2013.

NEIL MARTIN 95 points
68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It is magnificent, one of the finest vintages that I have tasted. Deep in colour, the bouquet bursts from the glass with copious scents of macerated black cherries, cassis, dates and Seville oranges. The palate is precocious yet balanced to a fault, a fine line of acidity keeping everything in check, exuberant from beginning to end. This Paul Sauer manages to be both hedonistic yet completely refined. Drink 2022-2045.

JAMES SUCKLING 94 points
This is a limited edition release of the 2009 Paul Sauer to commemorate 50 years of the Kanonkop label. The cabernet is really shining through now, with blackcurrant and blackberry-leaf aromas dominating, alongside lead pencil and spice box. Wonderfully fresh on the palate, with a medium to full body and silky yet very present tannins. Blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot. Drink or hold. - Claire Nesbitt
