ABOUT THIS WINE
The Pio Cesare Nebbiolo Langhe 2021 is a remarkable wine that reflects the rich heritage and dedication to quality upheld by the Pio Cesare family over their 135 years of winemaking. Situated in an ancient cellar built on Alba’s 2,000-year-old Roman walls, Pio Cesare is known for its commitment to producing exceptional wines from its 70 hectares of vineyards, which benefit from prime hillside exposures across multiple communes of Barolo and Barbaresco.
Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, this Langhe wine is enriched by a selection of grapes sourced from the Barbaresco and Barolo regions, providing the wine with body, structure, and the potential for long-term aging. The blending of different vineyard parcels helps create a wine that embodies the complexity and character typical of Nebbiolo.
In the glass, the 2021 Nebbiolo Langhe presents a vibrant ruby colour, hinting at the fruit intensity within. The nose is aromatic, showcasing a delightful bouquet of ripe cherry, raspberry, and floral notes, combined with subtle hints of spice and earthiness, reflecting its noble pedigree.
On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be full-bodied and well-structured, with intense and ripe fruit flavours that are balanced by a refreshing acidity. The tannins are notably sweet and smooth, contributing to a velvety mouthfeel that enhances the overall enjoyment.
Vinified in stainless steel with a maceration period of 20 days, the wine is then aged for 24 months in oak, with a part aged in barriques. This careful aging process allows the wine to develop its complexity while preserving the vibrancy of the fruit.

Founded in 1881 by Pio Cesare, the winery has remained a family-owned business for over 140 years, maintaining a strong commitment to quality and tradition while adapting to modern winemaking techniques.
The estate encompasses around 70 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with the noble Nebbiolo grape, along with Barbera, Dolcetto, and other varietals. The vineyards are located in some of the most prestigious areas of Barolo, including Serralunga d'Alba and Barolo itself, where the unique terroir—characterised by clay-limestone soils and favourable microclimates—contributes to the richness and complexity of the wines.
Pio Cesare’s winemaking approach is rooted in a deep respect for the local heritage and traditions of Piedmontese viticulture. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested and undergo careful fermentation and aging processes. The iconic Barolo wines are typically aged in a combination of large oak casks and small French oak barrels, allowing for the development of nuanced flavours and aromas while maintaining the varietal integrity of Nebbiolo.

These wines are known for their elegance, structure, and aging potential, often exhibiting flavours of dark fruit, floral notes, and hints of spice and tar, characteristic of the Nebbiolo grape. The winery also produces a selection of Barbera and Dolcetto wines, showcasing the diversity of the region.
Under the stewardship of the fifth generation of the Cesare family, Pio Cesare continues to honour its rich heritage while embracing innovation, ensuring that it remains a prominent name in the world of Italian wine.
