Description
The 2022 Ridge Lytton Springs is a vibrant, fruit-forward blend of Zinfandel, Carignan, and Petite Sirah. It offers lush layers of ripe raspberry, blackberry, and plum, complemented by hints of spice, pepper, and a touch of herbs. Juicy, full of character, and impeccably balanced, it’s an approachable yet layered wine perfect for sharing. A lively expression of Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley — enjoyable now and built for cellar aging.
*****
In 1972, Ridge made its first Lytton Springs from vines planted on the eastern half of the vineyard at the turn of the century. Both the eastern and western portions of the vineyard were purchased in the early 1990s. The vineyard is planted to Zinfandel and its principal complementary varieties.
2022 was the third year of drought with only 635mm of rainfall throughout the season. Thankfully, spring rains helped the vines but caused shatter to the Zinfandel, reducing the crop. Two heat spells pushed the vines to another early harvest which took place between 19th August and 12th September. The grapes were crushed and fermentation proceeded with natural yeast. The wine was aged for 16 months in air-dried American oak barrels (17% new, 3% one-year-old, 10% two-year-old, 10% three-year-old, 60% over five years old).
Winemaker note
An early spring and mild weather contributed to a uniform but moderate fruit set. Frosts in May reduced yields in some blocks, but as each parcel is on its own timing for bud break, most of the vineyard was spared. The rich fruit, refreshing acidity and firm tannin of this complex wine showcase the balance and quality typical of an exceptional vineyard. Approachable even as a young wine, this classic Zinfandel will continue to evolve over the next ten to fifteen years
67% Zinfandel, 19% Petite Sirah, 11% Carignane, 3% Alicante Bouschet

Tasting Notes: The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend is reflected in the purity of the cassis-and-cedar nose. The oak is perfectly judged, framing the fruit and adding some extra structure without dominating the wine. A more forward vintage for Estate Cabernet, this will drink earlier than the 2018.
88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot.
JAMES SUCKLING 94 points - "Such a real and focused cabernet with redcurrants, Spanish cedar, and mint. Medium to full body. Firm and fine tannins. Some redwood and spice, too. Chewy and juicy. Give it a year or two to soften."
