Description

IN BRIEF
Rossignol-Trapet Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 is a refined, powerful Latricieres that pairs energetic fruit concentration with floral lift and a finely grained mineral spine. Clear ruby with a garnet rim, it offers intense red and black cherry, Morello and wild strawberry with perfumed violet and rose petal; airing reveals sous bois, sweet spice, cedar and faint graphite. Medium plus with a concentrated core and silky texture, Morello cherry and blackcurrant are joined by cured meat, mushroom and olive tapenade while subtle oak brings clove and toasted spice. Chalky tannins lend backbone as bright saline acidity keeps the palate vertical, finishing long and stony. Approachable now with decanting; will reward patient cellaring. Drink 2026 to 2042.

ABOUT THIS WINE
Rossignol-Trapet Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 is a refined and powerful example of Latricieres terroir, combining energetic fruit concentration with floral lift and a finely grained mineral spine. The colour is a clear ruby with a youthful garnet rim. The nose opens with intense red and black cherry, Morello and wild strawberry, layered with perfumed violet and a crushed rose petal note typical of top Burgundy. With time in the glass the bouquet broadens to show sous bois, sweet spice, cedar and a faint graphite mineral thread that hints at the vineyard’s limestone clay soils.

On the palate the wine is medium plus in body with a concentrated core and an elegant, silky texture. Primary fruit of Morello cherry and blackcurrant is complemented by a savoury seam of cured meat, mushroom and olive tapenade, while subtle oak nuances of clove, vanilla and a touch of toasted spice add structure without overwhelming the fruit. Tannins are finely chalky and supportive, giving backbone and length, while bright, saline acidity keeps the profile fresh and vertical. Mid palate complexity builds with notions of dried herbs, a light cocoa bitterness and a persistent stony minerality that carries the finish to a long, resonant close.

The 2017 vintage in Burgundy produced wines of ripe fruit and good balance; here it yields a Latricieres that is generous yet precise, showing immediate charm alongside the architecture for medium to long term development. Approachable now with gentle decanting, the wine will reward patient cellaring as tertiary notes of leather, forest floor and truffle integrate further.

Drink 2026 to 2042, peaking 2028 to 2036. Match with duck breast with morello cherry sauce, roast pigeon, porcini risotto, wild mushroom dishes, beef en croute or seasoned soft and mature cheeses to complement the wine’s mix of juicy fruit, savoury complexity and refined tannic structure.

JANCIS ROBINSON 17+ points
Succulent and ripe on the nose and palate, with a lovely raspberry and cherry note. Not especially generous, with compact tannins and zesty acid on the finish. (RH)

From: Back to Burgfest: 2017 Reds – Blind (Jan 2022)
The 2017 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is very stubborn and closed on the nose, then opens wonderfully to offer red cherries, wild strawberry and pomegranate scents, but frustratingly, it ebbs away with further aeration. Very mercurial. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and fine depth and grip, delivering admirable precision on the finish. It will need a few years to settle down, but it should come good in the end. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. - By Neal Martin on September 2021

ABOUT ROSSIGNOL-TRAPET
Domaine Rossignol-Trapet is a highly regarded family owned producer based in Gevrey Chambertin in the Cote de Nuits, noted for powerful yet finely detailed expressions of Pinot Noir that emphasise site clarity and ageing potential. The domaine combines long standing Burgundian tradition with careful modern technique, working parcels that include prized village, Premier Cru and grand cru vineyards across Gevrey and neighbouring communes. Vineyards sit on classic limestone and clay soils and are managed to reveal terroir differences between plots.

The estate remains in family hands, with ownership and management entrusted to members of the Rossignol-Trapet family. This continuity of stewardship supports a consistent vision focused on slow, attentive viticulture, respectful yields and measured interventions in the cellar. Winemaking is overseen by the family alongside a small, experienced technical team who apply parcel by parcel vinification to preserve each site identity. The cellar philosophy stresses meticulous sorting, small batch fermentation, gentle extraction and precise temperature control to build structure while retaining aromatic lift.

Vineyard practice privileges hand work, canopy management and selective harvesting to ensure physiological ripeness and balanced phenolic maturity. Some parcels are farmed with organic principles and soil health measures to promote biodiversity and long term vine vigour. Older vine holdings contribute concentration and depth while younger plantings bring freshness and clarity; clonal selection and rootstock choice are used to refine balance over time.

In the winery the team uses a mix of traditional oak vats and modern stainless steel for control, and élevage is tailored by cuvee with thoughtful use of French oak barrels to add complexity without masking fruit. The domaine’s wines are typically described as concentrated and structured yet poised, showing black fruit, iron and spice with floral nuance and a saline mineral thread. With careful cellaring many bottles develop remarkable complexity and length. Domaine Rossignol-Trapet remains a benchmark for terroir driven Pinot Noir from Gevrey Chambertin.
