ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Georgia is considered the ‘cradle of wine,' with evidence of winemaking dating back over 8,000 years, including the discovery of indigenous Rkatsiteli grape seeds in ancient clay vessels. Established in 1953, Vachnadziani Winery is one of the oldest wineries in Georgia. After facing challenging years during the Soviet era, the winery has since undergone significant investment and revitalisation, aiming to preserve its ancient winemaking traditions while incorporating modern technology.
Vachnadziani boasts over 1,000 hectares of vineyard across various regions, primarily in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia, as well as in the Imereti, Racha, and Lechkhumi regions of western Georgia. With a diverse portfolio of 25 vine varieties, the majority of which are indigenous to Georgia, Vachnadziani captures the rich heritage and charm of this historic winemaking land through its exciting and dynamic range of wines.
The vineyards in Kakheti benefit from a moderately humid climate, with hot summers and cool winters. Situated at an altitude of 320 metres above sea level, the vines are trained using the Vertical Shoot Position (VSP) method and are double Guyot pruned. The clay and loamy soils provide excellent water retention, sustaining the vines during the hot summers. To manage weeds and enhance soil health, cover grass is planted between the vines, and organic mineral fertilisers are used for soil treatment. The indigenous Saperavi variety, known for its dark skin and pink flesh, is particularly notable for producing richly coloured wines with marked acidity, aptly named "Saperavi," which translates to ‘dye.' The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal maturity.
At the winery, the grapes undergo careful sorting to ensure that only the best fruit is vinified. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic conversion to soften the palate. To enhance complexity, 8% of the wine is aged in new French oak barrels for eight months.
Vachnadziani Winery embodies the harmony of ancient traditions and modern techniques, producing wines that reflect the unique heritage of Georgian winemaking. Each bottle tells a story of dedication, craftsmanship, and the beauty of the Kakheti landscape, inviting wine lovers to explore the distinctive character and charm of this historic wine-producing region.
