Description

Quinta do Portal Vintage Port 2003 is an extraordinary wine, receiving high praise from critics. Wine Enthusiast awards it 95 points, identifying it as potentially one of the best wines of the vintage, with ripe fruit and immense tannins creating a dense, intense profile. Vinous rates it at 90+ points, highlighting its saturated dark ruby colour and deep aromas of black cherry, cassis, and chocolate. The palate is rich and concentrated, characterized by a lavish, chocolatey texture yet displaying youthfully inelegant qualities. Jancis Robinson scores it 18.5 points, noting its intense purple hue and complex character, despite initially subdued aromas. This Port promises significant aging potential and rewards with layers of complexity as it develops.

*****

WINE ENTHUSIAST 95 points
Potentially one of the best wines of the vintage, this is an extraordinary performance from a producer not previously noted for making such high-quality Vintage Ports. The wine—a special selection that at this stage, has no name—has great ripe fruit and huge tannins combined to make a dense, intense wine. It is dark, brooding and rich. There are also layers of dryness which shows the aging potential of this great wine.

VINOUS 90+ points
Saturated dark ruby. Deep aromas of black cherry, cassis, walnut and chocolate. Concentrated, dense, broad and superripe but also quite pliant; hugely rich and chocolatey if a bit youthfully inelegant. Impressively dense and glyceral young port that really clings to the glass. Seems very 2003 in style without being at all cooked. Finishes with big mounting, spreading tannins and a pungent herbal note reminiscent of mescal. - Stephen Tanzer

JANCIS ROBINSON 18.5 points
Blackish intense purple – one of the deepest colours of all. Obviously lots there but very little on the nose other than alcohol at first sniff. Some sweet tea emerged on the nose. Masses of weight of fruit and then very dry tannins but acidity well managed. Lots of alcohol on the finish plus some black pepper. A wine full of promise. Masses of character there. Douro in a bottle. Hint of putty.
