Description

The 1994 Warre’s Vintage Port stands out as a remarkable wine, showcasing the estate's depth and character. Rated 94 points by The Wine Advocate, it presents an opaque purple hue and exhibits a drier style, offering superb richness and well-integrated tannins. Aromas of peppery, licorice-scented raspberries and blackcurrants are prominent, with a great mid-palate and impressive length. Decanter awarded it 91 points, noting its richness and density, complemented by structured, stewed plum flavors, although it requires time to develop further. Jancis Robinson scored it 16 points, describing its evolved crimson appearance and intriguing gamey notes. While approachable now, this vintage port promises continued pleasure and longevity, ideally enjoyed between 2029 and 2050.

THE WINE ADVOCATE 94 points
Drink Date: 2008 - 2040
"One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port."

Rich, dense and seems extracted on the nose, with slightly cooked fruit, plus full, rich, stewed plum flavours. Structured but still lacking in definition. Satisfying but needs time to open up. Better in five years.

JANCIS ROBINSON 16 points
Rather evolved crimson with a ruby, almost brick edge. Very sweet and alcoholic – the main impressions at this stage. Something rather gamey and intriguing. Good acid balance but the tannins are perhaps a little slight for a great vintage port. Lots of medium term pleasure rather than indomitable ambition. Long enough. (JR)
