Description

The 2003 Warre's Vintage Port is a wine of remarkable character and depth, earning 93 points from The Wine Advocate. Noted for its aromas of black pepper, sealing wax, and spices, this concentrated vintage reveals a youthful, masculine profile with dark fruits intertwined with peppery nuances. The palate is silky and endowed, leading to a long, tannin-filled finish that will benefit from serious cellaring. Jancis Robinson awarded it 17 points, finding rich, spicy aromas of black fruits and floral notes, along with chocolate and coffee on the palate. Vinous rated it 92 points, praising the brooding aromas and compelling purity. While Decanter gave it 89 points, highlighting its ripe character, this exceptional Port can age gracefully until 2050, making it a standout choice for collectors. (120 words)

THE WINE ADVOCATE 93 points
Drink 2030 - 2050
Black pepper, sealing wax, spices, and toast are found in the nose of the potentially exceptional 2003 Warre's Vintage Port. A concentrated effort, its youthful, classically ungenerous, masculine character reveals black pepper laced dark fruits. Silky-textured in its immensely endowed mid-palate, this top-flight effort displays an admirably long, tannin-filled finish. It will require serious cellaring.

JANCIS ROBINSON 17 points
Deep garnet. Rich and spicy, ripe and floral. Roses, local esteva (gum rockrose), flowering from the glass along with black fruits. Sweet, ripe and generous. Choclolate and coffee on the palate. Smoothed but still grainy tannins. Warm, full and richer than I expected for the Warre's usually lighter style. Gentle rather than light. Not as persistent as the Graham's and Dow's 2003s tasted alongside. (JH)

VINOUS 92 points
Deep ruby. Brooding aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Broad, dense and deep, with compelling purity, lift and sweetness and captivating flavors of black cherry, dark chocolate and minerals. Finishes with broad, sweet tannins and superb chewiness and length. Has the structure and depth for extended cellaring. - Stephen Tanzer

DECANTER 89 points
Tasted by: Richard Mayson, Shane Jones, Demetri Walters MW (at Decanter Tasting Suite, London, 01 Oct 2022)
Part of Vintage Port 2000 and 2003: panel tasting results
Drinking Window: 2022 - 2042
Deep centre turning on the rim, ripe and heady both on the nose palate. Background chocolate notes together with coffee bring a hint of complexity. Full, rich and expressive.
