Description

IN BRIEF
AA Badenhorst Family Wines Secateurs Chenin Blanc is a lively, textural South African white that marries Chenin purity with modest skin contact and judicious lees ageing. Pale straw with a luminous core, it offers green apple, quince, pear, citrus blossom and honeysuckle, then crushed stone and wet slate. Light to medium bodied with a tensile, slightly grainy texture, the palate shows lemon pith, poached pear and bright pinpoint acidity balanced by a fine phenolic grip and a saline mineral seam. Lees influence supplies subtle toasted almond and pastry without oakiness. Food friendly and versatile, serve well chilled with oysters, grilled prawns, fish tacos, goat cheese tart or lightly spiced Asian dishes. Drink 2026 to 2029.

ABOUT THIS WINE
AA Badenhorst Family Wines Secateurs Chenin Blanc is a lively, textural South African white that exemplifies the variety’s natural energy and the producer’s low intervention approach. The colour is pale straw with a bright luminous core. The nose offers immediate orchard fruit of green apple, quince and ripe pear, lifted by citrus blossom and a delicate honeysuckle perfume. With gentle airing the bouquet develops a layer of crushed stone and wet slate together with subtle pastry and toasted almond notes from lees ageing that add depth without obscuring primary clarity.

On the palate the wine is light to medium in weight with a tensile, slightly grainy texture that reflects modest skin contact and careful lees handling. Flavours of lemon pith, green apple and poached pear lead, framed by bright pinpoint acidity that keeps the profile fresh and lively. A faint stone fruit sweetness is balanced by a fine phenolic grip which contributes structure and a savoury almond nuance on the mid palate. A persistent saline mineral seam threads through, lending drive and persistence and preventing the texture from feeling indulgent.

The winemaking philosophy is conservative and site responsive. Grapes are harvested to preserve natural acidity, fermentation is managed to retain aromatics and the wine sees measured lees ageing to build mouthfeel rather than overt oak influence. The result is a Chenin Blanc that marries varietal purity with gastronomic versatility.

Serve well chilled as an aperitif or alongside a wide range of dishes. Excellent matches include oysters and other shellfish, grilled prawns, fish tacos, goat cheese tart and salads with fresh herbs. It also partners well with lightly spiced Asian plates and richer shellfish preparations where acidity is needed to cut richness. Approachable now, the Secateurs Chenin Blanc will reward short term cellaring to allow phenolic elements to integrate further. Drink 2026 to 2029.

ABOUT AA BADENHORST FAMILY WINES
AA Badenhorst Family Wines is a respected South African producer based in the Swartland, celebrated for expressive, site led wines that champion old bush vines, minimal intervention winemaking and a distinctive sense of place. The project was founded by Adi Badenhorst after a career in Stellenbosch, and it has grown into a family centred operation that combines traditional viticulture with creative winemaking approaches to highlight regional fruit purity and texture.

The winery remains family owned and operated, with Adi Badenhorst as the public face and principal winemaker. He is supported by family members and a small skilled technical team who share responsibility for vineyard management, cellar work and commercial matters. This close knit structure allows for rapid decision making in the vineyard and a consistent house style across the core range and single parcel bottlings.

Vineyards are sourced across the Swartland and adjacent districts, often from old bush vine parcels of Chenin Blanc, Grenache, Cinsaut, Syrah and other Mediterranean varieties that suit the warm, dry climate and varied soils. The focus is on low yields, manual canopy work and selective hand harvesting to secure concentrated flavour and balanced phenolic ripeness. Soil health and dryland farming are emphasised to preserve vine resilience and to express distinct parcel character.

Winemaking under Adi favours gentle handling and a light touch. Fermentations typically employ indigenous yeasts and are carried out in small batches using a variety of vessels, including concrete, old oak barrels and amphora like containers, chosen to reflect the needs of each lot. Minimal filtration and cautious use of new oak allow primary fruit and textural nuance to remain central. Blending is used selectively to build complexity while maintaining clarity of site identity.

Stylistically AA Badenhorst wines are generous, textural and aromatic, offering stone and orchard fruit for whites and vivid red and black fruit, spice and savoury lift for reds. They are both food friendly and age worthy, and the producer is widely credited with helping to elevate the international profile of Swartland terroir through a combination of family stewardship, careful farming and thoughtful cellar craft.
