Description

Domaine de la Vougeraie, located in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, was established in 1999 by Jean-Claude Boisset of the Boisset group. The creation of the winery involved consolidating vineyard holdings from various negociant companies that Boisset had acquired over the years. The name "Vougeraie" reflects the significant vineyards and the family home situated in the village of Vougeot, while the production facilities are housed in the historic cellars once belonging to Claudine Deschamps, Jean-Claude Boisset's wife.

The domaine is committed to high-quality production, using biodynamic farming practices in its premier and grand cru vineyards to ensure the health of the vines and terroir. With carefully limited yields, Domaine de la Vougeraie produces elegant and expressive wines that reflect the unique characteristics of Burgundy, showcasing its dedication to craftsmanship and sustainability in winemaking. The estate's focus on biodynamic principles positions it as a forward-thinking producer in the region, earning acclaim among wine enthusiasts and collectors.

Clos de la Chapelle vineyard was first established on this site around 1150, at the hands of monks who founded the Morgeot Priory and subsequently the Cistercian Abbey of Morgeot, including the chapel walls that still stand today. This 4.5-hectare vineyard has stood the test of time in this deep terroir where marl and clay prevail over limestone, and expresses itself in two colours: radiant gold and shimmering ruby. This great wine touches the soul as well as the body, and the percentage of old vines contributes to its racy opulence. Clos de la Chapelle has been aged for 16 months in oak barrels (20% new, medium toast) and 2 months in stainless steel tank. Stirring of the lees: twice a month during the fruit days and rising moon until December. Not racked.

The harvest began on the 30th of August. The fermentation has started in stainless steel and finished in Allier and Cîteaux oak barrels (medium toast) with againg of 16 months in oak barrels (20% new). Very aromatic vintage with notes of stonefruit and clementine notes, beautifuly balanced and lifted finish.

Pale lemon colour, a little bit of well-chosen oak on the nose, with a refined but intense white orchard fruit beneath. The skin of a clementine, suggests Sylvie. This starts well in the mouth then kicks on beautifully with a refined acidity. A high class Morgeot with excellent persistence.
Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

JANCIS ROBINSON 17 points
Monopole. Direct and racy but with excellent fruit underneath. A sturdy price for a red Chassagne but it's a very good wine! Has a beginning middle and end. And some potential for evolution. (JR)
