Description
Didier Dagueneau the ‘Wild man of Pouilly’ as he was affectionately known, tragically died in 2008 at the young age of 52. He was a legendary winemaker whose ideas about winemaking were very different to anything before in the Loire at this time. He halved his yields and began tilling his vineyards by horse. He paid scrupulous attention to detail at every stage, from vineyard management (biodynamic since 1993) to winemaking processes in the cellar. He redeemed the reputation of Pouilly-Fumé and became one of the greatest winemakers of his generation.
Didier’s iconic estate is highly regarded for making age-worthy Sauvignon Blanc in Pouilly-Fumé. His name lives on in the 5th generation and the Domaine is now led by his son Louis-Benjamin. Louis-Benjamin had worked alongside his father for many years and clearly absorbed his perfectionism and his methods. Benjamin’s wines are exceptional. They are pure, intense and focused and represent everything that is wonderful about this domaine.
The new release is of the only wine made in the 2021 vintage the ‘XXI’, Vingt et un. Owing to the terrible frosts suffered across the vineyards of the Domaine like so many others they harvested very small yields. Louis-Benjamin decided it made more sense to make one cuvée made up of the best of the bunches from across all the vineyards which resulted in this unique wine ‘XXI’.
