The 5th Duc, Maurice de MacMahon, has taken over the winemaking from his mother at the family domaine, L’Abbaye de Morgeot, in Chassagne-Montrachet. The estate has historically rented out its vines and sold grapes to the leading Beaune négociants, but now they are vinifying and bottling the best wines under their own name.
Most of Les Houillères is within the Puligny-Montrachet appellation but the vines right next to the village are only classified as Bourgogne. The soil and wines are similar and this offers great value as a result. Fermented and aged in 228 litre oak barrels of both French and Czech origin, this is rich and generous with fine, honeyed fruit and crisp acidity. Drink 2024-2027.
