Over ten generations of Girardins originated in Santenay until 1982 when Jean Girardin split up the vineyards between his four children. His son, Vincent, bought more vineyards and began a negociant business moving to Meursault. There is an emphasis on purity of fruit with minimal oak in both the reds and whites. Approachable when young, the Grand Cru have the potential for cellaring.
The Vincent Girardin Meursault Les Vieilles Vignes is a blend of plots sourced from around the village of Meursault. The average age of the vines is 50 years and the terroirs include Sous la Velle, Corbin, Dressolles, Clos du Cromin and Vireuils. The Chardonnay grapes are all harvested by hand and sorted first in the vineyard and then again at the winery. They are lightly pressed using a pneumatic press at a low pressure to get a slow extraction. After a gentle racking of the must, the wine is put in French oak casks of 500 litres (10% new) for both of alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Ageing on the fine lees lasts 15 months. One month before bottling, the wine from different barrels is placed in a stainless steel tank for blending and bottling is done according to the lunar calendar. This old vine Meursault offers a delicious combination of roasted almond and hazelnut with floral and mineral notes alongside butter, honey and citrus fruits. On the palate, a rich wine with a hazelnut flavour, beautifully balanced between unctuousness and freshness. The finish is long and structured.
