JAMES SUCKLING 94 Points
A medium-bodied, very tight and precise red with focused, firm tannins framing sleek layers of cranberries, blackberries, stones, slate and tobacco. Hints of dried fruit. too. Mineral and stony. Old-vine character here, with lots of bark and spice at the end. Lightly austere. Try this from 2024. - 06/22

Carlo Ferrini began this Sicilian project in 2012, with the first vintage of Nerello Mascalese being 2016. He has amassed eight small plots totalling just a couple of hectares on the north side of Etna – some are just outside the Etna DOC zone so this is labelled as Terre Siciliane instead – and he uses neighbour, Pietradolce's high-tech winery and cellar. Vinified in stainless steel then matured in 7hl barrels for one year before several months in concrete, this wine candidly displays all of Nerello Mascalese's charm: pure red fruit fragrance with some smoke and earthiness, mirrored in the mouth along with a prickle of spice, some subtle tannic grip and vibrant freshness. Sapid, tangy fruit carries through on the long, vibrant and fresh finish. Beautiful.

Current vintage. Transparent ruby. Rich yet nervy with lots of pace. And some light animal notes. (JR)
