We are pleased to offer, for the very first time, the amazing wines of Podere Giodo!
Podere Giodo is a six-hectare wine estate in Brunello di Montalcino situated between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo. The estate was set up by Carlo Ferrini in 2000 and today is managed by Carlo and his daughter Bianca. The name Giodo is a contraction of his parents’ names, Giovanna and Donatello.
Carlo Ferrini is one of the most famous winemakers in Italy largely due to his extensive research on the many clones of Sangiovese. He is also the winemaking consultant for many of the country’s top wineries, including Fonterutoli, Brancaia, Romitorio, Talenti and many more.
What is special about the Giodo range of wines is that these are Carlo’s own projects from vineyards he purchased and tends to himself. After spending years working in regions all over Italy, he has identified special sites that he has personally invested in because he believes they have incredible terroir expression.
As well as the flagship wine of Brunello di Montalcino, the Ferrinis also produce an IGT Sangiovese, called simply “Giodo”. The grapes come from vines also located within the DOCG limits of Montalcino but due to the Ferrinis’ limited licence for the production of Brunello, the rest of their grapes go into this IGT Sangiovese. Outside of Tuscany they also produce an Etna wine under the Giodo label called Alberelli di Giodo.
Carlo’s first vintage for Podere Giodo in Brunello was in 2010, producing just 3,000 bottles. The single vineyard is based in a secluded spot with fantastic exposition facing Mount Amiata. The house style according to Bianca is “elegance, elegance, elegance” with an emphasis on minimising extraction to keep tannins supple and balanced. Today production is up to 10,000 bottles a year.
Notes:
The Giodo 2020 La Quinta is all Sangiovese (with fruit from younger vines) from a vintage that will be remembered for sunshine and heat. This wine shows the power you can expect with bold fruit tones of candied cherry and baked raspberry. The primary intensity of the wine is bold and decisive, making this wine a great choice for a cheesy food favorite, whether that be lasagna or baked brie. The finish is smooth and tight. Drink 2022-2028.
