Description
Established in 1694, Rust en Vrede is proud to be part of a remarkable three hundred year old wine tradition. Since 1977 the Engelbrecht family has specialized in the exclusive production of red wine, with the focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Proprietor Jean Engelbrecht has worked to maintain Rust en Vrede as one of South Africa’s premium red wine estates, with full-bodied and complex wines that reflect the uniqueness of its Stellenbosch terroir.
Tasting Notes: It presents a deep, opaque ruby, with an inviting nose of ripe cassis, black cherry, and dark plum, elegantly intertwined with classic notes of cedar, pencil shavings, and a nuanced hint of tobacco from judicious oak maturation. The palate is full-bodied, yet wonderfully balanced, delivering concentrated dark fruit, notes of bitter chocolate, and a suggestion of espresso. Firm, yet finely integrated tannins provide excellent structure, with a vibrant acidity that carries through to a long, savoury, and rather refined finish.
Awarded 93 points by Tim Atkin MW, this particularly fine South African Cabernet is enjoyable now but promises to evolve rather handsomely over the next decade or so.
Grape Variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
