*****
Tignanello was a milestone in Tuscany and is one of the most iconic wines to come out of Italy. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first contemporary red wine blended with untraditional varieties (specifically Cabernet) and one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region that didn’t use white grapes. It’s produced with a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and considered one of the best of all the Super-Tuscan wines and certainly one of the most sought after.
THE WINE ADVOCATE 93 points
Drink Date: 2015 - 2027
The 2011 Tignanello demonstrates a very ripe and fruit-forward personality with bursting cherry and blackberry folded within sweet spice, moist tobacco and honey-almond paste. Its texture is heavy and dense with sticky spots of sweetness (the alcohol is recorded at 14.5%). With such a fruit-heavy personality, the wine doesn’t reach the soaring heights or brilliant complexity we see in cooler vintages. It should veer toward a greater sense of focus and tightness with more bottle age. - Monica Larner
JAMES SUCKLING 95 points
Ruby, rose, clear color. Fresh grapes, red fruit, marble and stone on the nose. Paprika, some cinnamon and fresh cherry on the palate. Light tannins develop structure and complexity. Sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon. Better in 2016.
VINOUS 95 points
Kirsch, rose petal, pomegranate, exotic spices and mint are woven together in a fabric of notable class in the 2011 Tignanello. An exotic wine that captures the essence of the year, the 2011 is endowed with magnificent complexity, nuance and class. The silky, polished finish makes the 2011 incredibly appealing today, but the wines from this site have always aged very well. The 2011 is going to need time to shed some of its baby fat, but it will always remain extroverted and racy to the core. I can't wait to see how the 2011 ages. - Antonio Galloni
WINE ENTHUSIAST 93 points
One of the first Super Tuscan wines, this iconic blend of 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc opens with aromas of scorched earth, underbrush, ripe plum and a whiff of blue iris. The palate offers dried black cherry, prune, mocha, licorice and clove. Assertive but refined tannins provide the framework. Drink 2016–2021. — Kerin O’Keefe

Drinking Window: 2018 - 2028
An exuberant, full-figured and precocious wine, portraying the generous warmth of the year. Macerated berries, cherry compote and dried Mediterranean herbs waft from the glass. On the palate ripe fleshy plum and black cherry are girdled with lavish tannins. While this vintage might not have the tension or freshness of previous and subsequent years, its heritage remains evident.
JANCIS ROBINSON 17 points
Slick, internationally styled soft red fruit with a hint of oak, and an appetising, tangy finish. (WS)
