Description
The 2023 Domaine de la Vougeraie Vougeot 1er Cru 'Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot' Monopole offers an early, captivating glimpse into a truly rare Burgundian treasure. As a Monopole, this exceptional parcel of Chardonnay within the revered Vougeot 1er Cru appellation is exclusively owned and meticulously farmed by Domaine de la Vougeraie, ensuring an singular, unadulterated expression of its ancient terroir. This wine is more than just a white Burgundy; it's a testament to heritage and meticulous winemaking.
Though still incredibly youthful, this nascent vintage already signals immense promise, combining exquisite elegance with profound depth. On the nose, anticipate a delicate yet assertive bouquet featuring fresh white flowers, crisp green apple, and vibrant citrus zest, beautifully underscored by a distinct, chalky minerality that evokes wet stone and saline purity. The palate is a symphony of precision and vibrancy, driven by a taut, linear acidity that frames a pristine core of fruit. Layers of ripe pear, subtle lemon curd, and a sophisticated whisper of toasted almond and brioche, imparted by judicious oak integration, emerge with grace. It culminates in a remarkably long, beautifully structured, and invigorating finish. This is a wine crafted with a long future in mind, destined to evolve into a complex masterpiece, showcasing the pristine potential and unique character of this exceptional white Burgundy over many years.

An attractive lemon and lime colour. The bouquet is reserved, discreet yet fine, before opening out a little more to display correctly ripe orchard fruit. There is a superbly managed generosity of fruit on the palate, building in waves rather than volumes, with depth as much as breadth at the back. This is a first class Clos Blanc with superb persistence. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

This unique wine impresses with its quality, depth and character as much its rarity. The fruit aromas of nectarine and Mirabelle plum are charmingly accented with hints of white flowers, spice and beeswax. The texture has great elegance and a chiselled character that one wouldn't necessarily expect in 2023, with lovely freshness and length. The Chardonnay from the domaine's 3ha monopole is assembled with the grapes from a few Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc vines before pressing and fermentation in tank and ageing in cask.

The 2023 Vougeot 1er Cru Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot has a lovely bouquet with apple blossom, wild honey and light Clementine scents that are very well defined. The palate is well balanced with good concentration, boasting lightly spiced white peaches and pears. It is quite poised and tensile on the finish. This is a level up from the previous vintage and comes recommended.
