Description

A red-amber ‘Belgium-style Dubbel’ – complex, unctuous and slightly sweet brown ale. Maudite, meaning cursed, evokes the Quebec legend of La Chasse-galerie (The Bewitched Canoe) which tells the tale of lumberjacks from camps working around the river who, for a night of fun, risk anything by making a pact with the devil. Straw coloured and poring with a thick head it has a subtle bouquet of spices with citrus notes, aromas of yeasty bread, coriander and cloves. Orange and spices are the main flavours with good sugar/acidity balance and a honey finish.

Beer and food pairings: Ideal with poultry, white fish, mussels, salmon tartare, butter asparagus, goat cheese or gruyere. But also in preparation of Crepe Suzette pancakes!

Critic tasting note: "Known for its Belgian-style brews, Unibroue seems to have an excellent understanding of the country's traditional styles, creating here a strong dark ale that rivals some of Belgium's finest originals. An upfront note of rich, bready malt is drizzled with buttery caramel sauce as well as accents of baking spice, brown sugar and raisin. Those notes continue through to the creamy, mouth-filling palate, while smooth flavors of toasted spice, light oak, brioche and caramel square join in. It's a big and satisfying beer, offering lots of concentration and depth in a wonderfully balanced and surprisingly drinkable package." - 94/100, Wine Enthusiast.
