The first release of Maclean & Bruce has arrived. MacLean & Bruce is a luxury Scottish company with high level privileged access to the whisky industry. To mark the occasion of the company director, world-renowned whisky authority Charles MacLean MBE's 70th birthday, he has personally selected, nosed and tasted one of his favourite single malts, a 30 year old Longmorn from Speyside. Longmorn is revered among blenders and connoisseurs. Bottled in a premium Glencairn Supreme Decanter, each individually numbered bottle will be one of only 153 bottles.
This release forms the first in a series of special numbered editions from MacLean & Bruce, each of which will be housed in a charming, reusable outer case in the shape of an antique, leather-bound book. Subsequent releases will be housed in different colour book boxes and feature a stellar selection of whiskies.
"Pale amber. Re-fill American oak hogshead. Slow-running thick legs, indicating viscous texture. A mellow nose-feel, rounded, and a complex aroma which combines sweetness (butterscotch), fruitiness (orange zest, ripe pears, ripe cantaloupe melon) and initial oiliness (teak oil - soon displaced by increasing toffee notes, now vanilla fudge), on a faintly woody base (balsawood?). The last is brought forward by a drop of water, and the oily note now polished leather. Mouth-filling and teeth-coating, with a creamy texture. The taste is sweet overall, with some lively pepper in the long, warming finish, and a cool aftertaste, reminiscent of Sichuan pepper. Less pepper at reduced strength and not so sweet, but altogether rounded. Longmorn is uncommon as a single malt, it has been described as ‘the master blenders’ second choice’ – the first choice being his own whisky! It is famously rich and robust, and benefits from long-ageing. This is a first rate example: full-bodied, complex (the aroma constantly changing in the glass) and wholly satisfying." - Charlie MacLean
